    Chapter 1

    BEWARE! BEWARE!

The wicked witch with the scraggly hair and brown, crooked teeth shrieked her ominous warning.

Beware all you who dare to follow me, she bellowed as she waved her broom back and forth before us.

The aging storefront windows were laced with spiders’ webs. Grimacing Jack-o-Lantern’s glared back at us casting an eerie yellow glow on the streets below. In the distant I heard the forlorn call of an owl coming from the decrepit graveyard nearby.

Many have walked this way, never to return.

Fog cloaked the streets as dusk began to fall. The witch cackled as her footsteps fell on cobbled stones. Her black cloak waved behind her in the bracing autumn wind.

Soon, she whispered, you will see things you’ve never seen before.

I looked over at my brother, Kyle, and wished our mother were here.

    He looked back at me.

    And snickered!

He loves this kind of thing.

You picked a good day to join us, she spoke low now. The skies are dark and a wicked wind stirs from the West. A good day for the spirits to rise from the grave and torment the souls of the living.

A good day? Hah. My wet bangs were plastered to my forehead. Cold, wet drizzle was dripping down the back of my jacket, soaking my shirt underneath. And chilling me to the bone.

Already my palms were sweaty. My heart was racing. And I wanted to turn back. But there was no turning back. Our Mom already paid for the tour.

This is so corny, Kyle whined under his breath. It’s not scary at all.

It’s a tour Kyle. Not a horror movie, I whispered. Secretly, I was relieved that so far the tour didn’t seem to have any scary surprises. My brother, Kyle, loves being scared. I hate it.

This place would make a great setting for a horror movie. I can see it now. Kyle made a box with his hands and scanned the streets as if he were scoping out the movie in his head.

I can see the giant spider stampeding down Main Street, he said, with excitement in his voice. Oh, wait, he cried. That’s not a giant spider. But it’s a pretty big one, on your collar!

Just then I felt the scratchiness against my neck.

Eeeek! I screamed and clawed at my neck.

I felt the black scratchiness against my fingers.

I heard the screams from the lady standing next to me. She must have seen a spider too because she was grabbing at her neck too. Then the other people on our tour were pointing at the enormous spiders. And screaming.

Wait. No. They weren’t screaming. They were laughing. And pointing. At me. And so was Kyle. I looked at my hand and saw that I was pulling on a scarf—the long, black, scratchy scarf of the woman next to me.

It must have blown against my neck. And Kyle knew I’d believe it was a spider.

My brother loves to scare me. And I hate it.

I guess I overreacted. But it’s not the first time. Like I said. I hate spooky stuff.

But Kyle loves it. He is just crazy for anything scary.

So the costumed tour guide’s wicked witch routine didn’t give him the creeps the way it did me.

I clutched my jacket collar close around my neck and tried to laugh it off as we headed off in the direction of the town square. This whole town gives me the creeps. But that’s just too bad because we moved here two days ago. And now I’m stuck here.

This tour was a present from our Mom. She thought we should get to know something about the history of our new hometown. I wonder if Mom knew it’s a haunted history?

My new hometown has all the things I hate. Cold weather. Cloudy skies. Witches and Warlocks. Ghosts. Goblins. Jack-o-lanterns. And Halloween.

This is an old New England town called Witch’s Cove, and it looks just like it sounds. Dark and spooky. With creaky old buildings and cobbled stone streets. There is an old church next to an even older graveyard and a cove of deep, dark water within view of the town square. Overlooking the cove is a high, rocky cliff called Warlock’s Leap. And there are witches everywhere. Pictures, paintings and statues of witches. Screaming witches. Laughing witches. Staring witches. Witches with black cats. Witches flying on brooms. There’s even a big cutout of a witch serving pancakes!

You see we just moved here from California because our parents bought the Witch’s Cove Inn. My name is Katie Siwell. My brother is Kyle Siwell. We just turned twelve years old. And we are twins. But we look nothing alike. In fact, people say we could not be more different. Kyle has dark, wavy hair and brown eyes. I have blond, wavy hair and blue eyes. And freckles. Kyle is tall for his age. But I’m just average.

Our likes and dislikes are nothing alike either. Kyle likes scary movies and I like comedies. Kyle is always reading scary ghost stories but I like to read books that are silly and fun. I’m afraid of the dark. Kyle thinks sunny days are boring. I run from spiders and Kyle collects plastic spiders, as well as rubber snakes, fake blood and three sets of fake vampire fangs, all of which have been used to scare me out of my skin. I like the sunshine, beaches, swimming, surfing and skateboarding. He likes thunderstorms, ghost stories, horror movies, haunted houses and skateboarding. If he didn’t like skateboarding we’d have nothing in common.

Oh, yeah. There is one more thing he likes. Kyle likes scaring me. And I like getting him back. Or at least I would, I think, if I ever could. One day…

Hey, did you hear that? Kyle said, elbowing me in my side.

I was lost in thought. Thinking about California.

What is it Kyle? I’m not a punching bag you know. I groaned, rubbing my sore rib where he had poked me.

Did you hear what she said? This town is haunted by the ghost of the Mad and Bloody Witch of the Cove? he whispered fearfully.
