That’s what Kyle Siwell and his twin sister, Katie, thought. But too many strange things have been happening for them to deny the truth.
Magic has awakened in Witch’s Cove. And something magical--and evil--is coming after them!
They will need magic to fight it. But what are they fighting? And how do they find it--before it finds them?

    Chapter 1

I was running so hard my lungs hurt.

I could hear the heavy breathing behind me.

    Gaining on me.

Halloween Night! My favorite holiday. Until now. Until just about an hour ago. That was when I was attacked by the ghost of an evil warlock.

    I fought him off.

Well, my sister and I and a black cat named Spooky.

My name is Kyle Siwell. And I am twelve years old.

And, tonight, we were able to send the evil warlock away forever.

Because…now this is the really freaky part…because I am a warlock too. And my sister is a witch. And we never knew!

So now we can’t wait to get home. That’s why we are running. My sister Katie and I. Because we want to get back to our normal life. Before we know that bad things exist. Really scary things that go bump in the night. Real warlocks and witches.

    Kyle!

    I didn’t stop to look back. "

Wait!" Katie huffed, breathing hard. She was having trouble keeping up. Which is funny because she’s the athletic one in the family. She likes to swim and surf and play volleyball. She did all that stuff in California, before we moved here to New England.

Me. I like to watch scary movies. And read scary books. And play scary video games. That’s what I want to do when I grow up. Write scary books. Direct scary movies. And produce scary video games. But I may need a break from scary right now.

Kyle, Katie said, catching up to me and grabbing the back of my jacket. We have to think about what we are going to tell Mom.

Mom. Oh, yeah. What do we tell Mom?

Hi, Mom. We just ran all the way from the top of Warlock’s Leap where we fought the ghost of an evil warlock. And sent him back to his grave. So what’s for diner?

    She’ll be horrified, I said.

Maybe she’ll be so horrified she’ll move us back to California, Katie said hopefully.

Not if I have anything to say about it, I scowled. This place is great. Now that we got rid of the evil ghost I can have some real fun here.

I know what I said about needing a little break from scary. But just a little break. Witch’s Cove is way better than California.

I can’t believe you still like this place, Katie retorted.

    It’s great, I said. It’s got atmosphere.

It’s got evil witches, warlocks and ghosts!

Not anymore, I pointed out and she couldn’t argue with me. We just got rid of it. Remember. That was the only evil warlock in town. Our teacher, Professor Grump had reassured us of that.

The ghost of the evil warlock Phylonious Phrynne had been haunting the town for centuries. He was waiting for the return of the three warlocks of Witch’s Cove. They were the only three warlocks who stood up to him when he drove all the witches of Witch’s Cove into the ocean so that he could have the town all to himself.

You see legend has it that when all three warlocks return to Witch’s Cove, the magic will return. And the warlocks will take their revenge.

Phylonious Phrynne attacked us because Katie and I are ancestors of Persevel Lewis. The only warlock whose descendants never returned to Witch’s Cove. Until now.

I guess he thought Katie and I would bring back the magic and seek our revenge.

Well, I guess we did, sort of. By sending Phylonious Phrynne to his grave forever. But Professor Grump says we shouldn’t expect the magic return. That it’s just an old wives tale.

And besides, the ancient warlocks of Witch’s Cove didn’t return.

    Just Katie and me.

The legend says the real warlocks of Witch’s Cove will return. The original ones. From the 1600’s. Persevel Lewis, Jonathan Ingersoll and Archebald Smythe.

And they are nowhere in sight.

I say we tell Mom the truth, I suggested. She’ll never believe us anyway.

I guess you’re right. She will never believe us. So I say we say nothing. Katie clearly wanted to forget the whole thing ever happened. But not me.

Say nothing? About a once in a lifetime adventure? I couldn’t believe her. No way! I exclaimed.

Yes, way, Katie insisted. We can’t worry her with all she has to do these days fixing up the Inn. She’ll think we’re having trouble adjusting to our new home. And she loves it here.

You mean she’ll think we’re mental.

"Yes, she’ll think we’re mental, too. What do you say? Should we keep tonight our secret?’ Katie asked, holding out her pinky to make a pinky swear.

    Pinky swear, we both agreed.

And with that we stepped into the lobby of our new home, the Witch’s Cove Inn.

And that is when things got really scary.

    Chapter 2

The warlock’s cold, red eyes glared down at me.

His two companions stood by his side, grinning their evil, toothy grins.

I could feel the coldness emanating from them like icy daggers.

I shivered clear down to my sneakers.

You have something that belongs to me, young man, he cooed as his cold, red eyes glared down on me.

This can’t be happening, I thought, as I starred back at the warlock, towering head and shoulders above me.

This is not how the night was supposed to end. Even if it was Halloween night. And even if Halloween was the night when the dead come back from the grave and walk among the living.

Witch’s Cove is a town full of witches and warlocks. But they were supposed to be fake witches
