The road swam before Kyle’s eyes as the phone rang again.

He snatched it up and glanced at the name. Not Hannah.

    Dad.

Kyle let his finger hover over the red button for a moment. A horn blared to his right and he snapped his focus back onto the road. A car crash was not a good way to go. He had somewhere to be.

The phone fell silent and Kyle took a deep breath to bring his heart rate back down.

He probably shouldn’t be driving, seeing as he most likely had a concussion. But since when had he followed convention?

His body still screamed at him from last night’s fall, but he couldn’t say he was angry about that. He deserved it. Rory was dead, because of him. If he wasn’t hurting at all right now, there would be no justice in the world.

Kyle jumped as the phone started up again.

He didn’t bother looking at the screen this time. He just punched the green button and pressed it to his ear.

Kyle? Dad asked from the other end.

    Hey.

    We were getting worried.

Kyle let the silence fill the car again. He tried not to think too much about what had happened. It was hard to avoid the thoughts, though. The memories kept flashing in.

What sucked so much about all these memories, was that they were always of the worst moments. He had to dig deep to pull up something good. What flashed in his mind the easiest was the sensation of losing his breath, from Tyler’s last moments. Or Sorin’s eyes, staring up at the night sky. Or that damned blood stain.

And all that would come back again if he tried to talk to Dad about it. But, he couldn’t really avoid it could he? No way Hannah would have held back.

    She told you?

Dad’s deep breath filled the earpiece. Yeah, he said finally. Yeah, we heard.

I’m going to end it. Kyle pressed his foot on the peddle, ignoring the climbing needle on the speedometer.

Kyle. Maybe you should come home.

Like hell. Kyle grit his teeth, forcing back the tears that smeared the streetlights more than the head trauma and speed already had. Everywhere I go, it’s death.

    Kyle. That’s not on you.

Tell that to Rory. Kyle’s voice cracked at her name.

Dad didn’t answer. The low hum of the road passing under the tires was all there was for several minutes. Kyle nearly hung up when Dad finally spoke again.

What are you planning? He asked.

I’m going back to the bridge.

I figured as much. And, when you get there?

Kyle picked at the stitching on the steering wheel with one fingernail. That wasn’t something he wasn’t ready to share. He had enough sleeping meds in the passenger seat to do the job, and that’s as far as he had thought.

He planned to do some research and see how much he could take before it killed him. He would get to the brink if he had to. It wasn’t his goal to actually end it, he just needed time.

"Don’t do anything stupid. Come home.
