There was a stain that looked like a skull on the ceiling over Kyle’s couch. The longer he stared at it, the more sinister it looked. Brown and twisted and pitted with the texture of the panels.

Sometime last night, with more than a couple cups of beer in him and not much sleep to speak of, it had seemed to be moving. It was leering and shoving its rotten face closer. Normally he would have laughed it off and put some junk on TV, a late night hunting and fishing show, maybe, to remind him of happier days with Dad. The problem was, ghosts weren’t just something living in his mind, anymore.

Kyle had never much liked his condo. It wasn’t that it was a bad place. Raventree paid well, and Hannah had helped him find the place. She had even insisted on decorating, though the only person who saw the results were him and the cleaning lady. Mostly the cleaning lady.

Unlike more popular shows, Ravetree had to put out twice the content per season to turn a profit. It seemed counterintuitive, but reruns didn’t do much to keep their more rabid fans content, so there always had to be one more show. Thank God it was cheap to produce.

Kyle threw his feet over the side of the couch, scattering the accumulated beer bottles and a pizza box. His chest constricted painfully as he hobbled to the kitchen and pulled open a sure-to-be-empty cupboard. There really wasn’t anything in the house. A couple rolls of toilet paper, neatly folded towels, and a set of matching suits hanging in his closet for the occasional event he couldn’t wheedle his way out of. Nothing edible, though. Even the beer was gone.

The doorknob rattled and Kyle froze, sucking in a breath that hurt way more than it should have.

Hello? The door swung open and Josh’s head appeared.

Shit. Kyle grabbed the counter and leaned heavily on it. You scared me.

It’s cause I’m black, isn’t it. He pushed open the door and rubbed his lower back, frowning as he closed it behind him.

Maybe it’s because: How the hell did you get into my condo?

Josh rolled his eyes. Hannah gave me a key. Said she couldn’t put up with you anymore and someone else needed to check in on you.

Hannah gave up on him. Well, she hadn’t been around much lately. Either she really was sick of him, or she had somewhere else to be. Maybe she was looking for a new job. She’d talked about that enough.

How are you feeling? Josh gave the
