    About the Author

    Flashpoint

Carl incessantly twirled the glass thermometer in his teeth.  Between that noise and the one of his tapping foot he drew many irritated glances from the few customers within the diner. He didn’t care. He would stare right back at them.  One little girl looked over, worried that the glass would break and that the mercury inside would leak out onto his teeth.  She wanted to tell him to stop. Her parents gently turned her back to their booth.

He looked at his watch, which still showed the digital numbers 12:01 a.m.

Bill said he’d be here by now.

The smell of bacon was in the air. There were only three other customers in the place, besides the family sitting in the booth behind Carl. A vagrant was sitting at the counter. Next to him were two college buddies yucking it up as they gorged on the carbs to build up their body mass for football.

He anxiously watched the window until he finally spotted Bill’s silver Lexus rounding the bend, headlights piercing the darkness
