CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
In 2011, in a particular issue of the Business Day magazine, on the topic Megalomaniacs abound in politics/medicine/finance, it was revealed that Life prevalence of narcissistic personality disorder is estimated at 1% in the general population and 2-16% in clinical populations.
What this stipulates is that, of the over 7 billion people of the world population, 70 million people suffer from this condition. So, in case you took that figure lightly because it’s just 1%, now you know how significant that figure is.
Interestingly, in 2009, from the studies conducted by Twenge and Campbell, they suggested that, the incidence of narcissistic personality disorder had more than doubled in the U.S in the prior ten years, and that 1 in 16 out of the population has experienced narcissistic personality disorder.
The statistics mentioned above on narcissistic personality disorder are not featured in this eBook in a bid to scare you, but to raise awareness on how much this disorder is beginning to eat deep into our population.
However, in the following paragraphs, I will be taking you through some sub-topics to help you better understand this disorder, before we go into proffering solutions.
Common Traits Prevalent Among Narcissistic Patients
There are a few notable characteristics one should look out for before you can categorically suspect another of having the narcissistic personality disorder. They are:
● Preoccupation with self: You can as well call it an obsession with self. The narcissistic person is usually known to live in a bubble where they are in constant admiration of themselves, so that at some point it becomes delusional.
● Inflated sense of self: The narcissistic person has a projection of what he/she is that can be considered delusional.
● Emotional detachment: Narcissistic people always want to appear strong, and since they see being emotional as a display of weakness, they try as much as possible not to allow themselves to be emotionally attached; thereby, risking to appear apathetic before others.
● Obsession with power and dominance: If there is one thing the narcissistic ever so desires, it is to be the one at the seat of power. They are generally power hungry people. They want to dominate, by all means, over others.
● Aversion to criticism: The narcissistic person sees themselves as beyond correction and admonition. They see themselves as all-knowing. In their books, whatever they do is definitely the right thing. So, in a case where they are being corrected or criticized, they feel like their perceived
authority is being questioned; it is pretty much a case of a bruised ego.
● Setting unattainable dreams: Probably, it’s one of the consequences of having an inflated sense of self, but the narcissistic person sees themselves as being capable of doing the seemingly impossible.
● Higher tendency to be manipulative: For the power hungry persons that they are, it is not farfetched for them to be highly manipulative. Because of the power-hungry persons, they have been known to be, and they easily tend to manipulate others for their own gain.
● Higher tendency to be jealous: It is already established that the narcissistic person loves to maintain dominance wherever they are found, they want to be the most successful person in the room; and when they aren’t, they tend to be jealous of the person who is holding the position they consider exclusive to them.
● The inclination to be the cynosure of all eyes: As far as the narcissistic person is concerned, they want to be constantly at the forefront of attention or limelight, and they let their actions be geared towards achieving that.
● Higher tendency to feel hurt or rejected: The narcissistic person wants all attention to be fixed on them; in a case where others do not place them on a high pedestal, as they would normally expect, they tend to feel rejected or hurt.
● Delicate self-esteem: However strong or confident they normally portray themselves as it is usually not
