    A PEEK INTO UNDERSTANDING NARCISSISM: BACKGROUND AND DEFINITION

    Narcissism, as you may already know, is defined as the admiration and love for one's self. This is something almost  everyone is guilty of – which is totally normal. It becomes an extreme case or narcissistic personality disorder when the individual has formed an unhealthy and exaggerated sense of self-worth; which goes a long way in marring his/her relationship with others and leading to self-destruction.

    Before we go neck deep into demystifying the narcissist, let’s take a moment to have an understanding of the origin of the word, narcissism.

    ORIGIN

    In trying to have a firm grasp of what narcissism entails, I think it is imperative to know how the word, narcissism, came about in the first place. Like some other words in English, it’s origin traces back to Greek mythology. This myth is mainly based on the character, Narcissus, the son of the River God, Cephissus and the nymph Lyriope.

    One distinctive thing about Narcissus that all literature regarding him seem to agree on (considering the disparities in some of the stories) is that he was an epitome of beauty and profoundly loved by the God Apollo.

    But this myth appears in two unique versions: The Greek and The Greco-Roman version.

    The Greek Version Of The Myth

    As recorded by Aminias, Narcissus shone in his beauty and glory, which made him desirable amongst men. Many male suitors came knocking to betroth Narcissus, but because he was of high taste, he turned all of them down. Amongst those men is Aminias, who primarily made it a point of duty to make Narcissus fall for him. But to his dismay, his consistent proposals were met with rejections from Narcissus. The constant rejections led Aminias to depression, and when he couldn’t take it anymore, he killed himself at Narcissus' doorstep, while praying to the gods to punish Narcissus for all the pain he had cost him.
