About this ebook

Bailey is not satisfied with being a career woman any longer. The death of her cat gives her the rest and she decides to move from Iowa to sunny San Diego to find a man of her own, someone who is a hero like her SpecOps veteran dad whom she adores. She gives up her life and career at home and starts all over again as a sales assistant at a supermarket on Coronado Island.

However, her first encounter with a member of the military leaves her in dire straits to convince him and his awesome teenage children that she is not a taghag.

When a teacher abuses her position of power and Bailey wins Sandro's trust, she is invited to stay in the guestroom until she has found her own place. However, the following day, both Sandro and his brother Rafael are called on duty. The boarding school the children usually go to during deployments is full and in the end, Bailey offers to look after Alina and Pedro, the two lovable teenagers.

When the responsibility weighs on Bailey's shoulders, she seeks refuge in unusual places to gain strength and fortitude.

    Dedication

Idedicate this book to all those who serve others, society at large or care for others in particular. Those that think and feel not only for themselves alone, but work to make this world a better place in their own way by giving of themselves, often sacrificing for the greater good.

Also to those who support those in service, the partners, the families, the friends who write letters, talk, listen, hold that space and never forget those who serve humanity.

Know that you are appreciated. Know that you are not invisible.

    I see you. Thank you.

    Chapter 1

The End of a Long Journey

Bailey couldn’t believe her eyes when she drove onto the base. There were men in and out of uniform everywhere and they all looked more than fit, handsome and heroic. Even men she probably wouldn’t look at twice if she met them out of uniform, she thought. She was overwhelmed and had to pull over to take a deep breath. Yes, there would be husband material here, just like her friend had told her. And she couldn’t wait to start her new job at the supermarket. She didn’t care that it was beneath her qualifications. She had studied and worked her way into the top position, managing the bank in her hometown, but in the end, she had come home alone to an empty house, safe her cat. And then her cat had died and Bailey had decided, she needed more out of life than a lonely existence, no matter how much money she earned.

The men she had dated out of desperation had all been ignorant fools who didn’t have a wider perspective than the length of a football field. She had finally given up and decided she needed to leave town. She wanted a good man like her dad, only, they seemed to have stopped production with his generation. At least in her town. Her dad was a veteran, a Marine. He had been part of a few special operations, only that he couldn’t talk about it because it was still classified, in spite of the fact that Mark Luttrell had already spilled the beans in Lone Survivor.

You don’t know about all the things he didn’t write in his book, her dad had said to this. And some things, the world can never know.

It was Sarah Johnson, owner of the biker bar, and one of her best friends, although they both were so very different, who had told her to go and find herself a handsome Marine, a hero like her dad had been – and still was to her now. She had argued that some of the officers were well educated and you could definitely hold a decent conversation with them.

So she had turned down the offered promotion, left her job and home and had bought a good SUV in which it was comfortable to drive the many miles from Iowa to San Diego where she had found a job as sales assistant at the local store on base. Things you did for love, she thought while looking out of the window and admiring the men in combats walking past. They looked almost as good as her dad in the old photographs her mother was so proud of and dusted every day. Her mother had never stopped hero-worshipping her dad and her dad had never
