About this ebook

Carry Bishop is on the run from New York City after a date gone sour. The florist gets stranded on the road when her car breaks down and she has to seek help. When she flags down a biker, assuming, he'd be a good mechanic to help her fix her car, she is not prepared for what is going to happen next. Dan protects her from the man she is running from and takes her with him on a wild ride, all the way down to Tennessee to see some friends. When Carry considers buying a florist shop out there, things unfold in a much different manner than expected.

She finds out that Dan has lied to her and his friends kept his confidence. A corrupt, shady lawyer is taking advantage of an old lady and things begin to spin out of control. Can Dan, his best friend Ranger and the bunch of Merry Mechanics save the day and will Carry and Dan overcome the odds and find a way to be together?

This book is full of hotter-than-hellfire scenes, hilarious situations that will have you double over with laughter and people, as different as they are from each other, who are bonded in friendship and love with a fierce loyalty and code of honour.

    Prologue

Neither Cinderella, nor the Fairy Godmother

Carry sat in her car and punched the steering wheel in desperation. She was only about one hundred miles out of New York City and her car had broken down. But that wasn’t the worst of it. Thomas was hot on her heels and she knew she only had about an hour on him.

How could she have got herself into this mess, she wondered, not for the first time. Thomas had seemed such a nice man. Good stock, breeding, education, and when he had shown an interest in her, she had thought, she’d been so lucky. Until tonight. He’d taken her out, but then the façade had crumbled and she had seen the real deal. He didn’t respect her. He had raised his hand to her because she hadn’t wanted to sleep with him, but Carry had stood her ground and glared at him, so the hand had sunk down.

When she had tried to leave the hotel room, however, he hadn’t let her, and only when she acted coy and told him, she needed a little more time and a glass of champagne, had he relaxed.

When he had gone to the bathroom, leaving her on the couch with her glass in her hand, she had bolted. He knew where she lived and where she worked, so she had got into her car after she had let out the air of one of his tyres and taken off. She’d gone to her apartment, packed her things quickly and left town. He had texted her, saying she could never again find work in NY and he’d find her and have her.

Of course, he had not worded it so openly. He was a lawyer, after all. He knew exactly how to word things, so only she would know what he meant. Veiled threats had rained into her inbox until she had switched the mobile off, also to save on battery. Then she’d got out of town and her car had broken down.

The last message had been alluding to her friend who lived outside of the city. How he knew about Susie, she had no idea, but she had indeed planned on going there. But when she had seen his message, she had changed directions. Now she was heading south and her car had just given up. A truck went past, but didn’t stop. Then she heard the sound of a motorbike and got out of the car to flag it down.

Bikers were good at mechanics, weren’t they? They usually did a lot of maintenance on their bikes themselves, if what she knew from media and books was to be believed.

It was dark and she only saw the bright headlight until the bike came to a stop behind her car. When she approached and saw the silhouette of the man, Carry wished, she had stayed in her car and let the bike pass. The man was huge, a mountain of sheer muscle. There were tattoos all over his arms, which she could see faintly after he’d switched off the engine and his light. Then he switched his light on again and took off his helmet.

Looks like you’re in a bit of a scrape, doesn’t it? his deep voice rumbled, sending goosebumps up her arms and down her spine.

The night was warm, but she shivered.

Thank you for stopping. I was wondering, if you could possibly have a look? she asked, trying to sound confident but failing miserably.

You’re quite brave, little lady, he smiled, turning sideways when he had come up to her and smiled down.

It’s not like I have much choice, she said, pulling a face. God, he was handsome, she thought, in a rugged, hair-tousled sort of way.

    You could call a garage?

    She shook her head.

No insurance? he asked and received another shake of her head. I guess, that means, you don’t have money for a repair, either.

I’m afraid, not really, she admitted.

Let’s have a look then at this pumpkin.

    Pumpkin?

Cinderella’s carriage was a pumpkin, was it not?

I’m not Cinderella, she shot at him, not liking his familiarity. She had enough of men trying to flirt for one night. She had seen where that led.

Well, I’m not the fairy godmother, either, he grinned, unperturbed by her aggressive stance, swaggered past her, got into her car, tried to start it and sighed when he heard the choking gurgle of the engine before it died down again.

Next, he opened her bonnet and looked at the motor. Another, heavier sigh followed.

This is scrap metal, you’d need a new engine to get this going again, he stated.

Do you have any qualifications to give an expert opinion? Carry asked.

After all, maybe he only said it to have her get onto his bike and take her somewhere more private and...

Come here, I’ll show you, he said, waving her over to his side.

    Carry approached carefully.

I don’t hurt little ladies and if I did, you wouldn’t stand a chance in hell, no matter how near or far you stand from me, so you might as well come and have a look, if you don’t believe me about the motor.

I’m not scared of you. I’ve got three black belts, she said with conviction.

After all, it was the truth. Two of them even were real leather. Let him assume, she was taking about martial arts grades. But he only smirked at her.

I’ll bear that in mind, he grinned.

The cheek of this man! His eyes were sparkling, his white, even teeth shone in the darkness and when she approached, he put a hand on her arm and gently pulled her a bit over, so she could see better. Strangely enough, even though she pulled her arm out of his grasp and he let go at once, she didn’t feel threatened or uncomfortable. She was actually quite happy he was there. She felt – safe.

Carry frowned. She was probably more traumatised by what Thomas had done than she had realized. Why else would she feel safe in this big, burly biker’s presence but because she desperately needed a saviour to defend her when Thomas turned up? But maybe he wouldn’t.

Then again, she couldn’t have gone east, there was the ocean. To the west, her friend lived and he knew about her, so south was really the only option. North was not. His own family lived north and he had written he’d get the family’s security guards to find her.

So here she was with a biker and a busted car and from what he was showing her, she could tell that he’d been right. You didn’t have to be a mechanic to see that this old car was dead for good. She sighed heavily.

    Where are you headed?

    South, she said.

I’m visiting my friend about five hundred miles down from here. If you have room in your travelling bag there for your handbag, I can take you as far as that. She hesitated. I’ve got a spare helmet, he added.

    I don’t think...

    He shrugged.

Suit yourself, little lady, he smiled and started to walk over to his bike after putting down the car’s bonnet once again.

Where are you going? she called after him, suddenly feeling scared to be alone again.

    South, he answered. Told you.

But... You can’t just leave me here!

You expect me to kidnap you? You said you didn’t want to come along, so I figure, you’d rather stay here and try your luck with a horny old trucker.

At that moment, a car approached, an expensive sports car, to be exact. She could tell by the sound of the engine. Thomas!

    Wait! Please!

The car stopped beside them and she stepped behind the biker.

Don’t leave me, please, she whispered.

    The biker groaned.

Oh no, I’m not into marital dramas, woman!

So now she was a woman and not a little lady any longer? Not good!

I’ll do anything, but don’t leave me! And he is not my husband or boyfriend, only he doesn’t get it!

    Anything?

    Within reason, she said quickly.

You don’t seem very reasonable to me.

    Thomas got out.

Hey, he smiled, pretending to be affable.

    Carry cringed behind the biker.

    Anything, she whispered.

    I make the rules?

    Yes!

If she had to give herself to one of these men, she’d rather it’d be the biker. She still felt safe with him in spite of everything.

The biker stepped forward, knocked Thomas to the ground, took off his tie, secured his wrists and feet with it and Thomas’ belt, slung the much lighter man over his shoulder and dumped him in the bushes. Then he ran the car off the road and let it roll down the hill. It crashed to the ground and wrapped around a tree near the bottom.

Carry stood there, shaking, mouth wide open.

I don’t like guys who women are so afraid of. Just doesn’t sit well with me, the biker shrugged and started to pack her belongings together in one bag, then slung it on her back.

Next followed his spare helmet which he placed on her head and secured carefully, and then he helped her to sit down on the seat behind him.

Hold on tight and lean into the curve with me. If you get scared, if you want me to slow down, shout, okay?

She nodded. He must have felt the movement. He took her hands and placed them around his middle.

Hold on tight, he called to her once again before revving up the engine and taking off on the road.

Carry held on tight. She had no choice, even though she found it strangely intimate to have her arms wrapped around his middle and her front pressed to his back. Then again, it was better than falling off the bike. Was she a criminal now? After all, the biker had bound Thomas up and smashed his car. But she had had no choice but to allow it. Still, she couldn’t let Thomas die bound in the bushes as he was.

If she made an anonymous call, she might save his life that way. Then again he’d come after her. But if she didn’t, she’d get arrested by the FBI for sure and thrown into jail.

The biker called to her, asking whether she was alright. She called back a short affirmative.

You can rest your head against my back, if that’s more comfortable for you, he suggested.

His deep voice carried easily over the roar of the engine.

She did. She was tired and worn and she was cold. The next time they stopped, she’d put on jeans and a jacket and proper shoes, she thought.

She was still wearing her heels and cocktail dress she had worn for her night out with Thomas. Only, it had ended in his hotel suite and not out at all.

    She shuddered.

You cold? the biker called over his shoulder.

    A bit, she admitted.

Can you last another twenty minutes?

    Sure.

    Good girl.

    Chapter 1

    Bear in a Bar

They pulled up at a biker bar sometime later. Her biker killed the engine and helped her off. Then he parked his Harley and walked inside with her, holding her hand.

Stay close to me, some of these guys are a bit exuberant.

When they entered the bar, Carry shrunk against him. She had never been to a place like this and she didn’t feel like being here. It was loud, smoky and raked of beer. The men looked as if they were ex-cons, hard men, and not with the most refined manners, either, especially not where women were concerned.

You’re my girl now. They won’t touch you, her biker reassured her.

His girl? Carry broke into a cold sweat. What had she got herself into and what did he expect of her?

    Beer?

    She shook her head.

    Just a diet coke, please.

Hey, Charlie, two large cokes, he called to the bar and then let go off her hand to greet some other men.

Carry was feeling panic rising inside her. She was scared and she didn’t want to let go of his hand. She had to step back to allow him room to hug his friends. One man, as big as a bear, lifted him and swung him around, then put him down again.

Carry moved backwards to get out of the way and not get knocked off her feet. She hit a wall with her back, only the wall turned out to be moving. She looked over her shoulder and a
