About this ebook

Shanti's mother, a hippie in her younger years, had not been able to conceive a child until she worshipped at the shrine of the Snake Goddess Manasa in India. Nine months later, Shanti was born. Now Shanti visits this sacred site to ask for a husband.

Kaz walks past the shrine and protects Shanti from some sinister-looking men. He is a wonderful man who has come from the city to care for his dying grandmother. While Shanti's feelings for him grow, she isn't sure, if Kaz feels the same as he has different things on his mind and heart at the moment. He takes Shanti to a temple, introducing her to his uncle, a priest. When they return home, Grandma has a last dying wish.

Can Shanti fulfil it?

    Dedication

Idedicate this book to the Divine within each of you. As Rumi said:

"You are not a drop in the ocean,

you are the ocean in a drop."

Never deny your own grandeur, your own innate divine glory. Never doubt that it is our birthright to lead a happy and fulfilled life.

There is nothing you have to achieve, no price you have to pay for happiness, for your right to exist in human form. Happiness is yours in the blink of a moment, as soon as you decide that it is so with all your being.

For you are divine, you are the creator of your own life.

    Prologue

    Communing with Manasa

Shanti looked up from the ground where she was kneeling in front of the statue of the snake deity Manasa. The shadow that had come over her, however, wasn’t that of a snake, but a man. She lifted her chin and looked at him, not seeing much but a dark shape in front of a radiant sun.

She frowned. Why did he disturb her in her prayer and meditation? Obviously, he wasn’t going to give way and let her have her communion with the deity, so she got up, pulling her saree up from her heels a little. She lowered her head, unable to look up into the sun and turned to walk from the goddess.

What can I do for you? she asked. I hope you don’t feel offended by my praying at the shrine?

What did you tell her? his voice asked. It was deep and sonorous and it carried far, even though it was not loud at all and he was walking closely behind her.

I asked for her blessings and help, Shanti answered. My mother came to India to find consolation and a miracle. She found both. She couldn’t have any children and when she was travelling down the road here, she saw this shrine and felt called to stop and pray for a child to this goddess. This is how I came into being. Now I am here to pray for something I need help with.

From which country are you? You have a British accent, but there is something a little foreign to it which I cannot quite place.

    Germany. I am from Germany.

Shanti took a deep breath and looked up once again. This time he did not stand in front of the sun, so she could see his handsome, proud and noble features. Shanti thought, she had been struck by lightning at that moment. When she gasped involuntarily, he took a step back.

I did not mean to frighten you. I heard you were travelling alone? Are you not afraid at all?

No, and you didn’t frighten me. I am well protected.

I can’t see any bodyguards near you.

    Shanti laughed.

Try angels, gods and goddesses or power animals, she suggested. They come for free, too.

But will they stop someone from hurting you?

They have sent you. And see those strange fellows over there? They have been waiting for me to finish praying so they could pounce on me. Instead you came along and they are hurrying away.

Who said you could trust me? the man countered.

She did. I prayed for protection and she laughed and said, it was already there and to open my eyes. That was when I saw your shadow falling over me. The goddess sent you for my protection. Why should I doubt her judgement, let alone be scared?

    The man laughed.

I am Shanti Saynes, by the way. Pleased to meet you.

My name is Khazana Sharma. My friends call me Kaz. And the pleasure is all mine.

He folded his hands and inclined his head the way she had to greet him when introducing herself to him. The manner in which he did so looked genuinely respectful. But Shanti resented it. She wanted him to touch her and had hoped to shake his hand. Not so. He was going to stay away from her. Beautiful protector that he was, he’d be too virtuous, of course.

Shanti smiled and lowered her eyes again, falling into step beside him.

Do you know if there is anywhere in the village where I can sleep for a night and have a simple vegetarian meal? I’d help with housework and give reiki healing sessions in return.

    Reiki?  Kaz asked.

    Yes, that is...

"I know what Reiki is. I just thought my grandmother would love it. If you trust me, you can stay with us. But I should probably tell you, I am unmarried. It might cause a stir for you to accept my invitation. My grandmother is old and cannot rise from her bed anymore. I’d offer to sleep
