Harbor (Prequel) - Ava Greene
CHAPTER 1
Leo had just gotten back from work when Angela’s call came in. She sounded nervous; her words were all over the place. That worried him, so he asked her to meet at the diner in the heart of Harbor.
As he stood in the empty diner that Thursday evening, Leo realized what he loved about the place. Its polished wood, marble floor, glass containers on the shelf, pretty waitresses, and even the gumball machine were so remarkable. Leo was a one-woman man by no means, but the whole town knew that Angela Daily, the mayor’s daughter, managed to tame him in the last twelve months.
He found Angela sitting on the table closest to the entrance. Everything seemed to vanish when Leo caught sight of her reddish-brown hair.
Angela,
Leo called a few feet away from her.
Angela stood up and faced him, her sea-green eyes seeming to catch the fading sun. When Leo reached her, he caught sight of a customer coming in. Strangely, though, the customer made an order, packed it, and left, again leaving him alone with his girlfriend.
Leo, please take a seat,
Angela said politely.
Alright,
he replied, eyeing Angela warily as he pulled a chair and plopped down on it.
Angela sighed and met his eyes. We need to break up,
she uttered all of a sudden.
Leo’s heart stopped for five seconds. All that slammed against his ribcage was hope – hope that it was an elaborate joke. He laughed a bit as the joke finally hit him. That was probably why no one was at the diner. Angela had a flair for the dramatic, and now that he thought about it, it made sense.
Today is our anniversary. You can’t fool me,
Leo said, laughing. He walked around the table to hug Angela.
Angela shifted uncomfortably in her seat until she was out of Leo’s hug. Her eyes darted back and forth, trying to focus on anything but his own. We need to break up, Leo,
she repeated.
Baby, what’s wrong? What’s the problem?
Leo asked as his mind ran a hurdle. He and Angela had a blast over the last few days. There had been no issue between them. They had gone mountain climbing and traveled to a few other states on a road trip.
She must be pulling my leg, Leo thought.
There is no problem, Leo. Honestly,
Angela said.
Then, what’s this about?
Leo asked, unable to comprehend. He could not bother to return to his seat.
It has nothing to do with you, Leo. I—
Stop! Do not insult me by giving that cliché speech. Just give it to me straight,
he uttered sternly.
Okay, fine; I’ll be honest,
she responded, standing up to look him in the eyes. "Do you remember when I suggested that we go to New York? Well, when we
