An Unexpected Miracle - Alexia Chase

    Book Excerpt

Twisting the knob, he opened the door an inch and glanced around the edge. He wanted the air of surprise and the opportunity to grab his gun before whoever was out in his garage could sense him. What a way to ruin my weekend before starting a new job.

From the doorway of his laundry room, he stared at the satin-covered ass of a woman. His mouth dropped open. The woman’s head was under his car, and her voluptuous backside wiggled with each of her movements.

Holy hell. He swung the door open for a better view. Yeah, I’m that kind of an asshole. If she’s trying to boost my car, I’m going to enjoy the show in the process. He crossed his arms and tilted his head.

    Asshole. Get out here. Now.

His face scrunched at her muffled voice under his car, and the husky lilt of her tone shot straight to his cock. Okay, the throbbing in my junk probably has a lot more to do with her curvy ass and my sabbatical from the female sex than her voice.

He looked around the brightly lit garage to see who she was talking to. When he didn’t see anyone, he frowned.

I’m going to smack your ass when I get you home.

Well, that is a fantastic idea. He bit his lip and watched her wiggle farther under his car. It was a tight fit. Damn, I’m glad I got a low riding vehicle, and she isn’t trying to boost my pickup truck.

The silk fabric slipped to the side, exposing her bare flesh. Holy hell’s bells. The woman’s long legs and round cheeks met to show off her sweet sex. I’ve got to see all of this woman. Now, this is the way to end a weekend.

    Chapter One

Nicole Collins wiped her feet on the welcome mat outside her sister, Leah Gregg’s front door. Twisting around, she bent down and made goo-goo faces at her Shih Tzu, Molly. Hello, Molly girl. Are you ready for a special treat?

Molly jumped inside the crate, placed her paws on the gray coated wires, and wagged her tail.

You are such a pretty girl.

The door snapped open, and Leah swiped a strand of hair behind her ear. You are so sweet, Nicole. Thanks for the compliment.

Nicole rolled her eyes. Lord, it’s getting deep out here.

Leah laughed, opened the door fully, and stood to the side. Come on in.

Bending down, Nicole grasped the handle of the dog crate and hefted it inside the massive, elegant estate. Her sister and brother-in-law, Aaron, had recently moved from a condo to their stunning new home. Aaron spoiled her sister mercilessly with houses, buildings, vehicles, and jewels.

Although it made her nauseous, she didn’t begrudge Leah. The two were still madly in love after seven years together. Now that – that made her want to stab her sister’s eyes out.

Are you ready? Nicole set down the crate, opened the latch, and let Molly out.

Molly yipped, ran through the foyer and into the living room, and then, she jumped from sofa to sofa.

Nicole? Is that the dog? Aaron’s deep voice echoed from the stairway.

She looked up and scrunched her nose. Yep, it’s my dog.

Shit, Aaron groaned and moved their youngest child, Charlotte, from one hip to the other.

Aaron, we talked about this. Nicole needs a place to stay while her apartment is getting painted. Leah moved over to Aaron and placed her hand on his chest. And it only makes sense that she stays here while we’re gone on our cruise. That string of break-ins in the area has me really nervous.

That explains Nicole, but not the dog. He turned to glare at Nicole. Couldn’t you board it? Aaron walked across the tile floor and set Charlotte down.

Auntie! Charlotte yelled and threw herself at Nicole’s legs.

Hey, baby girl. She leaned down and scooped up her favorite niece. Only niece. Their brother, Trey, had yet to grace them with nieces and nephews. And, her own dating life was a complete and utter flop.

She tossed Charlotte in the air and glared at Aaron. I’m not boarding, Molly. She’s like a child to me.

Fuck, Aaron growled, gave a death stare to the dog, and stomped through the room.

Really, he loves dogs. Leah broke out into a fit of giggles.

I heard that. I don’t like dogs. Or pets in the house. My offspring – yes. Pets – no.

Leah turned to face him. Molly is staying.

It had better not shit on my rug. Aaron stopped, gave Leah an evil grin, and winked. You’re making up for this. I’m bringing a box of goodies on the trip, and your mom’s watching the kids.

Oh. Leah’s face flushed, and she fanned herself. What are you bringing?

He bit his bottom lip and raked his eyes over her from head to toe. All your favorites, baby.

She shuddered forcefully and turned back to Nicole. The man is a beast.

I still don’t want to talk about your husband’s penis or the freaky stuff you’re into. Nicole swallowed and deposited Charlotte to the floor.

The little girl toddled over to the sofa and patted the dog on the top of the head. Molly licked Charlotte on the face, causing a fit of giggles.

Leah rubbed the back of Nicole’s shoulder. No worries, sis. I’ll keep my stories to myself. She frowned and wrinkled her nose. Are you sure you don’t mind watching the house? I really am weirded out about these break-ins.

And yet, you want to leave me here alone to protect your house while you go on an awesome adventure. That’s very thoughtful of you. Nicole walked to the sofa, threw herself down, and sunk into the cushions. Lord, I could learn to live like this.

Don’t be dramatic. You’ll be safe. We have a home monitoring system and a full-time security office in the neighborhood. Leah picked up Charlotte and kissed her cheek. You’ll be fine. But the last two break-ins occurred when the families were gone on a trip, and no one was watching the place.

I’m teasing, Leah. I’m not worried. This is a classy neighborhood, and you have neighbors less than a half-mile down the road. She’d seen lights through the windows and a lifted pickup truck with massive lug tires in front of one of the two nearest houses.

That home had been empty for several months, so someone must have recently purchased it. And she knew the couple that lived opposite the lifted pickup house. They were an older couple with grown children.

Yeah, I’m so glad to see someone move into the Lambert’s house. Although I haven’t met the guy yet.

Guy? Nicole arched an eyebrow and lifted her head up. She rolled her eyes and let her head fall back. Why bother. It’s been so long, I got tired of trying to impress anyone and let myself go. Unless the guy is into curvy women with an over-done downstairs’ bush, it’s a hard no sell.

Leah arched her eyebrows and grinned. It is a he, and I haven’t seen anyone else with him. He’s hot for an older guy.

    She wrinkled her nose. Older?

I’d say he’s in his mid to late thirties.

Oh. Never mind. She wanted children someday. Not a confirmed bachelor with an aversion to a wife and reproducing. Especially since she’d been told in her early teens, she would need to work hard to get pregnant.

Auntie Nic. Her dark-haired nephew, Mason, rounded the corner from the kitchen and ran full force at her.

Hey, Mase. Nicole opened her arms and braced herself for his assault. At four years old and forty pounds, it wouldn’t seem possible that he could cause bodily harm, but his head was a battering ram.

Once he’d torpedoed himself into her arms, and she was safe from bodily injury, she nuzzled his neck. Are you ready for your cruise?

Yep. We see dolfins. He rotated in her arms and beamed at his mom. Right, Momma?

Yes. Leah smiled back at him.

You’re going to see dolphins? That’s so exciting. Nicole’s eyes swept over the little boy in her lap. He’s a doll. It was like all the best pieces of Leah and Aaron had been shoved into a blender and out poured a perfect angel.

Sighing, she fought back a pang of disappointment. At twenty-five, she was still young. There would be opportunities to find Mr. Right. Or, if nothing else, hit up a sperm donor clinic and make her own magic. Her clock wasn’t at midnight yet, but it was edging ever closer to nine o’clock.

After her nephew moved on to make sure Aaron and Leah packed all his toys, Nicole shoved off the sofa and wandered around the living room. The area was spacious and classy.

Looking to steal something, doll? Aaron glared at her from the hallway.

Yep. I’m looking for the safe. She bobbed her head back and forth as she spoke. I think I know the combination you would use. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. She bit her lip to keep from busting out laughing.

God, you’re a witch. He opened his arms and beckoned her forward. Come here and give me a hug before we go.

Nicole laughed and embraced her favorite brother-in-law. Again, it was an easy win, as she only had one sister. Be good, Aaron. Take care of them for me. She rested her face against his shoulder.

I would never let anything happen to any of them. They’re my entire world. He squeezed her, and then, he inched backward. But I’m serious. Molly craps on the floor, I’m going to kick your butt.

Molly ran over and placed her paws on Aaron’s pant leg. Wench, he growled at the mop of fur. Bending down, he scooped her up and nuzzled her neck. You tell Leah I touched the dog, and I’ll –

Kids, look. Daddy loves Molly. We’ll work on him and get a puppy. Leah, Mason, and Charlotte stood in the doorway, holding hands with big smiles on their faces.

Ah, fuck. Aaron dumped the dog in Nicole’s arms. See what you did? You’re going to get lumps of coal for Christmas for eternity.

Nicole laughed at Aaron’s bullshit comment. He was all bark and no bite. Whatever her sister wanted, he’d hand to her on a silver platter. Where can I get a guy like that?

    Chapter Two

That night, Nicole stepped out of the shower and toweled off. The open floor plan in the master bathroom was divine. And the radiant heated floor made her want to fall to her knees and kiss Aaron’s feet. Something about standing on a warm floor felt luxurious and sophisticated.

She slipped her arms inside her satin robe and laced the belt. Glancing down, she frowned. There used to be a lot more ribbon hanging down when she tied the sash.

Peering into the mirror above the sink, she pursed her lips. I guess I don’t look too bad. She had dark black hair and deep brown eyes with milky white skin. Twisting to the side, she smiled. One good thing about gaining weight was big boobs. She cupped her breasts and
