I need to piss in a cup.

I glance over at Mick Grady before sparking the starter wire against the battery wire. The truck stutters to life.

I didn’t know you had a fetish for piss, I say. I rev the engine.

He snorts, scratching under his ski mask. No, fucker, because my P.O. got caught taking bribes and shit, so I got assigned a new pig and this one ain’t going to let the drug test slide. Would you give me your piss?

If I had a dime for every time someone asked me that, I mutter. What are you going to do? Carry it around in your back pocket? You know how these pigs are. They could grab you off the street at any time.

Mick snorts again. At this point, it might be less of a behavioral tick and more of a symptom of his drug. "They’re like rats except dirtier. Get it? Fuckin’ pigs."

I jerk the wheel clockwise as hard as I can. I hear the satisfying crunching sound as the steering column breaks. Mick claps his hand against my back, whooping louder than he should be.

As I start driving, Mick calms down and lounges in the passenger’s side. His expression changes as his face scrunches up in annoyance and he keeps muttering about rats and pigs. I knew he had the intelligence level of a brick, but he’s acting like we’re going grocery shopping. It’s a reminder that survival of the fittest is no longer applicable in our society or else he’d be dead. I’m still certain he’s going to die from one or a series of stupid decisions and there’s not a single thing I could say that would save him from that fate.

In my line of work, single-mindedness is a skill that’s honed until our brains set fire to anything that isn’t related to our objective. Saving Mick isn’t part of my objective and it never will be. The only thing I can do is wish him the best of luck at pissing in a cup, and hope that miracles rain down on him before bullets do.

I drive into a parking lot, clipping the curb. This late at night, it’s completely empty. When I’m nearly at the end of the lines of parking spots, I yank the wheel counter-clockwise. Mick’s head bounces against my shoulder as we spin around, then swings the other way as I brake. The tailgate ends up directly in front of one of the stores.

Fuckin’ show-off, Mick grumbles, but he grabs the massive chain and padlocks out of his duffle bag and jumps out of the truck. In the rearview mirror, I watch him lock the chain around the tow hitch and around the steel bars of the security door. The store’s sign, Conqueror's Caliber, is unilluminated

When he jumps back into the truck, I can almost smell his adrenaline and it smells a lot like rusted metal. Mick looks out his window. In my periphery, I see a single headlight sniper through our windows.

They’re ready, Mick says. I stomp on the
