    Abduction & Seduction

Through the dim window Dean watched a panorama of Midwestern landscape go by: corn, grass, more corn. It was so idyllically pastoral it made him itch. Without the light of the moon to throw the scene into relief, it was easy to imagine they’d been driving across the same mile over and over again, like some horrible American Gothic limbo. He wished for a deer to jump in front of the car, just to throw something interesting into view, then instantly regretted it.

Did you know that Iowa is home to the world's biggest wooden nickel? asked Coco, staring straight ahead. One of her lacquered nails tapped idly on the wheel.

That's so… Dean searched for the right word. Irrelevant.

What, you don't think that might be related to my research project? she shot back. He could see her wry smile turning up the corner of her mouth. Like, maybe this roadside attraction innocently erected by human hands could be drawing the attention of other interested parties?

If you're telling me you think extraterrestrial life is going to make a stop in the ass end of America just because of some farmer's idea of a good time– Dean started, but Coco interrupted with a loud: Aha!

Internally, he groaned. Now he'd set her off.

You said you didn't believe in extraterrestrial life, Doc! Yet here you are, willfully entertaining the idea that a) it exists, and b) it doesn't want to visit the world's biggest wooden nickel. Have you set aside your skepticism just to get in a jab at my chosen destination. This time she did look away from the road, in order to roll her eyes humorously at him.

Dean took a breath, willing himself not to roll his eyes back. One eyebrow raised, he managed to sound calm as he replied, It was a hypothetical, Miss Kravitz. You know, like a hypothesis. From the scientific method? I'm a scientist, remember?

Well, my hypothesis is that something in this neck of the woods is drawing mass amounts of interest from aliens, said Coco. Before Dean could draw breath to object, she continued, I mean, this area of the Midwest has more crop circles per acre than any other geographic region I've seen. And since there's clearly nothing else around here to be interested by… She shrugged. Maybe it's the nickel.

He couldn't help but laugh at that, albeit quietly. Coco's curly hair bobbed as she craned her neck forward, squinting to read the road sign ahead. The single blue streak she'd dyed into her natural chestnut brown drifted into her face, and she let out a puff of breath to blow it back.

Maybe your crop circles are made by the same guy as this wooden nickel, Dean groused. Some farmer with too much time on his hands. But his heart wasn't in it; Coco's good humor was too infectious, and she shook off the comment with another easy roll of her shoulders.

Dean let his head relax against the window. The rolling fields continued to pass him by, and lacking any visual stimuli to focus on, his eyes wandered towards the side mirror. It reflected the face of a man in his late twenties, whose full mouth was set into an unconscious semi-smirk. Dean's strawberry blond hair was messily finger-combed away from his eyes, the pale green of which was masked by heavy lids and dark, finely drawn brows. As he sighed, closing those eyes for a moment, his breath made a little fog upon the glass. Dean raised a finger to trace on the condensation three letters: U.F.O.

Then he turned to his partner, who was still driving like she hated the road: jaw jutted, tight grip on the wheel, eyes locked dead ahead. I know this is a fun and friendly road trip for you, Coco, but please tell me it'll at least be quick.

Off at the next exit, she sang, the happy note in her voice at odds to her ramrod straight posture. Despite her flippancy, Dean knew the road trip was more than a joke to her. In point of fact, she was taking it all too seriously.

And at this exit we will find… what was it you're looking for again? Dean said in his best deadpan.

You know full well, Mr. Scientist, she drawled. Evidence. Of. Extraterrestrial. Life.

Except knowing you, that'll probably be some grains that got knocked over in a vaguely ring-shaped direction, which you'll then tout as another 'crop circle.' It took all his effort not to make the air quotes with his fingers. "Which confirms
