Lady Dorsey! Lady Dorsey! The English voice echoed through the halls of the estate. The cries grew louder and louder as the voice grew closer to the workshop where Victoria Dorsey tinkered away. The cackling and burning of steel and brass nearly drowned out the supplications. Victoria pretended not to hear Dartogne, her father’s servant, but at last, the voice was right outside the workshop door. Victoria set down the welder and pushed the dark tinted googles up onto her soot-stained forehead. Stray strands of brown hair tumbled haphazardly across the lenses as the girl removed her heavy leather gloves.

In here, Dart! She yelled to the door. The handle turned and the butler opened the door. The formally dressed, perfectly coifed servant could hardly contain his displeasure at having to enter the workshop. A fine coat of soot seemed to permeate every surface and the shopworn tools and devices were strewn haphazardly about. His eyes turned to the young woman seated at the workbench.

It seemed to Dartogne that the woman in the shop was so filthy that only her clear brown eyes distinguished her from a pile of soot. Her hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, bound by a piece of yarn. Her father’s oversized shop shirt hung loosely from her thin frame. Victoria had rolled the sleeves up to her elbows to keep them from getting caught in the gears and joints of her latest project. Her pants were loose-fitting khakis. Dartogne suspected that she had obtained them from a store that catered to commoners or even bartered the pants right off a Tommy on his way to the front. The pants were tucked crudely into a pair of riding boots that had been retired from riding due to their scuffs and gouges. Over top all the other ridiculous clothing, Victoria had dawned the leather apron of a blacksmith. The butler didn’t want to know how she had obtained that.

If your mother sees you looking like this, she would be mortified. The servant remarked dryly.

You are mortified by me looking like this. Victoria responded. Ever since she was a girl, she enjoyed teasing the uptight butler. He was from a different era. One of formalities, class and expectations. Victoria had never taken to that environment. While her mother was an aristocrat, and in fact of minor nobility, Victoria had never taken to her mother’s ambitions for her. Instead, she had followed her father. Her father was also of noble birth, but had pursued a number of strange interests. First, as a watchmaker and then later adopted a new profession, something called a machinist. Lady Dorsey, the older Lady Dorsey, could hardly believe her husband worked with his hands. It was dirty, messy, and ignoble. Victoria loved it. She spent her childhood at her father’s side, in his workshop, learning from the machinist. Her father loved what he called devices. He taught Victoria to make a watch that could keep track of the moon’s cycles, then a grandfather clock that reminded you when to harvest the various vegetables from the garden. In the last years before the war, electric brains had just become available, and Victoria and her father created some of their most amazing devices yet. One analyzed the soil and told you which were the best vegetables for your garden. Another was able to use a simple bass arm with joints and pulleys to put away the dishes. The autonomous-disher as they had called it mortified Victoria’s mother. She had shrieked bloody murder when she arrived at the kitchen and witnessed a plethora of clockwork arms flinging dishes deftly into the cabinets. Victoria’s father had been forced to dissemble the device after that incident.

The following August, the Germans invaded Belgium, precipitating the Great War. Almost overnight, the British government had requisitioned all manner of men for the war effort. It wasn’t long before they came for father, the greatest machinist in the
