Hucow of the Aliens Returns
They came for her on a Monday. Two men, clad in the black and chrome uniforms of the Terran Alliance. Vicki had hoped that ignoring the letters would be enough. After all, she reasoned, the holo-shows were filled with messages of Terran victories, of the aliens being beaten back on numerous worlds. Why would they need more draftees?
Still, the letters came. At first, they were perky messages that dinged to life on her holo-pad. They pleasantly informed the redhead that her 18th birthday had come and passed, and they she needed to report to the nearest Terran Military Liaison station. It even provided the address and directions. But then the messages grew curt and forward. There were less pleasantries. Vicki asked her father what to do. He reminded her that the news said the tide of the war against the Korathians had turned, and that the war would be over within a year. She should keep ignoring the letters and they wouldn’t bother recruiting a young girl when the war was all but over. It sounded reasonable to Vicki.
So she ignored the communications, deleting them without reading them. Every day she watched the news. The Terran military seemed to be winning every battle against the Korathians, but not a single planet had been liberated. She began to think that the war might not be over so soon after all.
And then the men showed up. The two uniformed officials. They were lean and polished. They looked like you would expect a military liaison to look; they were the business, no-nonsense face of the Terran Alliance’s war machine.
Vicki and her father exchanged nervous glances as the men frankly explained that Vicki had been drafted. Had she seen the messages? Vicki and her father shook their heads in puzzlement. They had recently upgraded their in house communications, maybe the messages had been lost in the changeover? The men seemed apathetic and unconvinced. They were frank however, that Vicki was out of time. She needed to come with them. And so she went.
She felt like a cow as they sent her through the processing station. She was stripped, prodded and measured by doctors, given no privacy with the other recruits. It was uncomfortable for a girl who at age 19 had never spent more than a few nights away from home. Now she would be going off-world, to fight the Korathians, the mortal enemy of humans.
She was given a bland, grey uniform and a few weeks of lackluster combat training. A few exercises, a few drills with the plasma rifle. She only ever fired a few real shots. Her instructors explained that the fighters on the front lines needed every round they could get, so she as a trainee couldn’t waste plasma shooting at targets. She was trained in a female-only unit. The instructors claimed it reduced discipline and morale problems. Vicki had only ever had one boyfriend. She wasn’t a virgin, but she wasn’t exactly consumed with disappointment there were no cute military boys to flirt with. She wanted to make it back from the war in one piece.
Korathians, the holo-news claimed, were from far outside the planetary system. They had invaded human worlds in a war of conquest. Vicki had been a teenager when the first reports started to emerge. They had been inaccurate, citing the organized invasion force as a
