Grace McKenny’s first thought, was that her head felt like it had been hit with a brick. She felt her forehead throb as she noted the acrid smell of the air. Slowly, she peeled open her eyes. She was confused at first, as the sight that greeted her was an indecipherable white and clear mass. It startled her awake before she realized that it was her helmet visor—shattered beyond recognition.

With a groan, Grace sat up. Her body felt sore, but generally uninjured. What happened? She asked herself. She undid the helmet strap and cast the stifling, damaged equipment aside. Grace looked around. The terrain appeared to be volcanic flats. Flat, desolate terrain stretched off as far as she could see. The ground was hard, almost black rock, with identical stones scattered across the surface. The terrain undulated into hills and valleys, likely shaped by eons of volcanoes and wind storms. At the moment however, the place seemed oddly peaceful. Only a stiff wind whistled across the landscape.

Grace pulled off her flight gloves and let down her blonde hair. It had matted from being in her flight helmet so long, and her scalp was cooled and refreshed from the air. Grace scanned left, then right. She looked behind her. A long, gossamer parachute flapped in the breeze, still attached to her. She also spotted in the distance, her escape pod. Still smoking from what appeared to be some kind of emergency landing.

Grace stood, gingerly. Her legs seemed to work, no small blessing given that she had hit the ground on this rocky terrain. Grace packed up her parachute and made her way to the escape pod. As she trudged along, the woman tried to recall what had happened.

She remembered that she had been on a long range patrol. She was had been taking her spacecraft through the outer sector of known space. Grace struggled to remember what happened next, but the only images she could recall were of her instruments going haywire. She recalled a grey world, looming large in her cockpit. I can’t remember anything after that! She sighed to herself.

After nearly half an hour of trudging, she made it to the escape pod. The wreck was intact, but smoldering. LtCdr Grace McKenny was still stenciled on the side.

I hope the emergency beacon still works! She thought to herself. She made it to the remains of her escape pod and peered into the cockpit. Grace sighed. The electronics were all fried. She would have to rewire the emergency transmitter to the reserve power banks directly—A daunting task in the comfort of a carrier hanger. It would take days for her to do it out here, with the limited tools in the escape pod. And she just had to hope no other components had been destroyed in the crash.

But Grace was a still a Lieutenant Commander in the Interstellar Navy’s Flight Wing. If anyone could handle a crisis like this, it was her. My first priority is setting up a camp. I need shelter if I want to survive a night on this world, she
