Are you sure you don't want me to drive you? Kate asked. She pulled Susannah close again, kissing her neck.

Her lover rolled her eyes. You're not even dressed, Kate. She gently pushed Kate away, buttoning up her shirt. "And I'm already going to have to drive like a maniac to make my flight."

Kate sighed and flopped back on the bed, admitting defeat. Fine, fine. Enjoy your stupid conference.

Susannah bent down and gave Kate a kiss. Don't be like that. It's only two days. By the time you miss me, I'll already be back.

I already miss you, Suze! Kate pouted.

Susannah glanced at her watch and sighed. "I miss you too, sweetheart. But I've got to get going."

Kate stood up and gave her lover a hug. Alright, she said. Hurry. I don't want you to miss your flight.

Susannah smiled. Alright. I'll call you when I get there.

Kate laid back down and watched Susannah gather up her bags and hurry out of the bedroom. A few seconds later, she heard the front door slam. She closed her eyes and laid there for a long moment. Then she shook her head, opening her eyes.

I'm not going to sit around for two days moping, she thought. She got out of bed and moved to the window, pulling the curtains open. Sunlight streamed in, and the view brought a smile to Kate's face.

It had been Susannah's money that bought the house. She was the breadwinner in the family, but she never made Kate feel guilty about that. Kate stayed home and wrote, and sometimes she was published. But Susannah had always encouraged her to pursue her writing, and one of the reasons she had bought the house was so Kate could have the woods.

The property included several acres of land, and most of it was the woods. It wasn't really what you could call a forest – if you walked straight from one edge to the other, it would take less than an hour.
