A glorious underworld teeming with mystery rested just below the surface of the ocean, but humanity never had nor never would know it fully. Every denizen of the ocean was aware of this to some extent; everyone from the largest baleen whale to the smallest dogfish would always be content in the knowledge that their world could not be interrupted by human inquiry. For all the damage done to the ocean by people, they would never be able to disrupt it beyond repair, and the vast majority of its secrets would forever remain hidden.

Other secrets, however, had the choice whether or not to stay unknown to humans. Mermaids, for example. Kin to water nymphs, selkies, and sirens, they had long ago opted to remain out of sight of humanity and disappear from the histories of men.

So for years, scientific investigation marched on, and in time concluded that mermaids did not exist. Far from being offended, the species was collectively pleased by this. Chieftains of mermaid tribes nodded to each other, satisfied that their work of concealing themselves had been successful. Mermaids withdrew even further from humanity’s probing eyes. They marked themselves invisible – and therefore safe – forever.

What they could not account for, though, was a human’s curiosity paired with a mermaid’s desire. Which is why, unknown to any leaders of mermaidkind, precisely one human male was now aware of their race. And one mermaid girl was responsible for him knowing.
