“Mmf!” Before this cruel lesson, he'd taken his ability to speak for granted, and did not value it; now that it was gone, it seemed as essential to James as breathing. The tang of metal in his mouth was both foul-tasting and uncomfortable, not quite painful, where it brushed up against his back teeth. Experimentally, he tried to form words around the bit, only to produce a pathetic gargle of inchoate syllables.

"That's enough," Madame said smoothly; "I think you may learn your lesson just as well in silence. Do not shame yourself further by attempting speech - for now you must be meek, and silent as a doe. Such qualities reflect well on noble ladies."

The ready well of tears behind James' eyes surprised him, and he looked down to hide them from Madame. It seemed she was constantly teaching him the depths to which he hadn't known he could sink. Every time he was humbled further, his emotional vulnerability came out on display - another thing that brought him uncomfortably close to feeling female. Evidently there were still new ways for Madame to hurt him, and they did not all involve physical pain.

His whole figure had been transformed, and as James caught his breath beholding it, the corset seemed to tighten on him, reminding him of the way he was both emotionally and physically bound. But it was not the discomfort that made his heart beat so frantically now. It was the undeniable fact that the mirror had shown him, a fact that both shocked and humiliated him - yet also, in the deepest recesses of his heart, that he felt the barest stirrings of pleasure in knowing.

Why, you look like quite the lovely lady, Madame said, and James, in all his corseted, made-up glory, was forced to agree.

James Lockwood was shell-shocked. Someone beside him was speaking in his ear, guiding him somewhere by the arm, but he could no more discern the voice or its meaning than he could see distant planets with his naked eye. Indeed, his thoughts now were as far-flung as the reaches of space, and no less terrifying. For despite his long-held faith in his own masculinity - his unshakeable conviction, never once questioned, that he was a man - James Lockwood was dressed as a woman.
