"Can we have him already?" whined the younger girl, the one with white-blonde hair. She had a slimmer form than her sister, all lean muscle and underdeveloped hips, and she was looking longingly into Evan's eyes.

"Have me?" asked Evan nervously.

"She means to mate," drawled the dark-haired girl, who had regained her composure somewhat since the word "alpha" had first been uttered. "Not to eat."

Blood flowed into Evan's cheeks, and to other areas he tried his best not to notice.

"I - I don't think I..." he stuttered. "I mean, even if I did believe you could turn into dinosaurs and back... which is insane... I would never – I couldn’t, not without-"

Tenderly, the leader touched her hand to Evan's cheek. "Whether you believe or not," she said, "you are someone special. We can smell it on you. You smell like someone we should trust. Someone we should follow. And..." She had the decency to turn her head away, but a faint smile quirked at the edges of her mouth. "Yes, someone we should mate."

A light went off in Evan’s head.

"Alpha male," he breathed. If he stretched his imagination to encompass a world where velociraptors still roamed the earth, albeit in incredibly out-of-the-way islands no human had yet colonized... and further imagined that this particular velociraptor tribe could turn into humans whenever they crossed a certain body of water... it didn't seem too much of a stretch to conceive of an all-female pack that needed an alpha male, much like pack animals such as wolves or chimpanzees.

Without an alpha, Evan knew, pack animals devolved into violence and disorder, or at worst went extinct entirely. No wonder they were looking at him with such awe – his arrival must have signaled the saving of their tribe. Via mating.

Dappled sunlight fell on the backs of birds flitting capriciously from tree to tree. Their wings were pure motion against a background of subtler motion: the shifting of a breeze through leaves, the sway of tree boughs, an indistinct blur of bugs. A low drone echoed through the jungle, courtesy of the myriad insects that inhabited this particular environment. It was clear that humans were unwelcome here; none of the vegetation had been touched by so much as a footprint. Yet for all that, it was a quite romantic scene - lush foliage, birdsong, just the right amount of humid warmth. Only the most experienced of explorers would be on their guard after stepping into this paradise, a beautiful facade covering the harsh realities of the wild.

Evan O'Bradigan was no stranger to the wild. Unmoved by the seeming lull of nature, he was outfitted for exploration, not leisure. His light cotton shirt was rolled up at the sleeves, showcasing sturdy arms accustomed to heavy lifting. He moved gracefully through the jungle's underbrush, light-footed even in his tough leather boots. A belt around his cargo pants contained pouches with first-aid bandages and various other tools for a safe expedition, while the open vest over his shirt dangled heavy from his chest, its pockets full of accoutrements for the trip.

Moving his slow thighs through a patch of clinging bushes, Evan scanned the jungle with his sharp vision, alert at every moment for the motion of animals. He saw nothing, only the customary swaying of greenery and occasional gnat or fly. Satisfied, he stood straight. He wiped his curly brown hair from his brow; it was slick with sweat, and not a small amount of dirt had gotten caught somehow on his strong-featured face.
