Introduction The Journey Begins
Weight has been a battle for me all my life. Always the chubby kid right from grade school, my mom told me it was baby fat and it would go away. As a lonely child who felt unloved and abandoned, I found a friend in food and, as a self-conscience teen and later a young woman with low self-esteem, I turned to food for comfort and to numb the uncomfortable feelings that dwelled inside of me. I had a love-hate relationship with food and did not know how to deal with my feelings mentally or emotionally. Food was my comfort, but when I looked in the mirror and saw my increasing size, I hated what it was doing to me physically. It was such a tug of war. I was powerless over food. The numbing effect that food had on me was just as temporary as a heroine fix to a drug addict. Knowing that I would hate myself and beat myself up with a certainty that was just as strong as the pull to eat, the vicious cycle was one that I could not break.
In this book, I will share the things that helped me break the cycle. My goal is to encourage you and enable you to have freedom from the unmanageability of the chaotic merry-go-round that you too may be struggling with. To give you hope, help you to achieve realistic weight loss goals, show you how to get physically strong and sustain your strength, and maintain your weight for a lifetime. Change your lifestyle and stop the insanity of the yo-yo diet. Find out the reasons behind yourself- defeating behaviour. It is my hope that you too will find success in some of the things that helped me achieve my goals. They may not all be pertinent or beneficial to you. Take what you like and leave the rest, but I am confident you will find some helpful tips that will give you the ability to change these self-defeating behaviours for a lifetime.
