About The Author
How To Identify The Underlying causes Of Overeating
When people overeat, they usually do so because there is some underlying need that isn't being met in other areas of life. Yes, people can become overweight and obese for genetic reasons or have a medical condition that makes them overeat. Still, the vast majority of dieters are neither of these things.
The first step to cutting down on overeating is to identify what the causes are. Identifying one's underlying needs will help guide choices about how best to manage the problem when rearing its head again.
So, what are the underlying causes of overeating?
Low self-esteem or self-confidence.
When people feel good about themselves, they tend to control the weight carried by eating well and exercising. When people feel vulnerable about themselves (such as those who are bullying victims or have had past abusive relationships), they overeat because it gives them a sense of power over others and a sense of connection with others.
2. Social pressure.
Many people overeat when they are part of a social group that puts pressure on them. This can be family members who constantly push food on one another or a social group with a weird
eating habit.
3. A need for love and attention.
When people have low self-esteem, they tend to seek comfort and acceptance from others. This can be as simple as seeking the approval of others, or it can be as complicated as being the victim of an unfaithful spouse or having a childhood filled with cruelty and abuse. Or a group of friends who have decided it's fun to chow down together. People can even feel peer-pressured into eating more than they need because of the feeling that everyone else in the room is watching and judging them.
3. Distress and anxiety.
Several studies have shown that stress can cause people to eat more, even if calories aren't an issue. This is because anxiety causes changes in body chemistry that trigger calming effects and the desire for comfort foods. Overeating can be a way to cope with stress.
4. Uncontrolled eating.
Many people who are overweight or obese have a tendency to eat regardless of their hunger. This isn't a conscious choice, but because they feel powerless and often aren't aware of how much they're eating, it can become a habit.
5. Poor self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.
This may cause the desire to believe that being overweight is OK or somehow desirable.
