Chapter 1

Piper looked anxiously around, but her ally was nowhere to be seen. What had his name been? Danny? She remembered him as thin, black-haired, and dapper, and wearing some sort of red tie or bow-tie that must have been part of the waiters’ uniforms. His phone call had brought her back to this restaurant on a night that might otherwise have been very sad. Her entire life might have been different if she hadn’t come here and found Isabella trashed and drinking alone after their near-breakup fight.

She’d promised to call back sometime and tell Danny how things had gone, but she’d forgotten until the moment she’d actually reached the restaurant with a ring in her pocket.

This place was so many things. They’d had their first date at that table over there, and later gotten on her knees and licked Isabella to orgasm out back in the cold and snow. Over there was the table she’d found Isabella drinking by herself, and across the room were the tables they’d put together this year when her family had visited. Isabella had been incredible that day, despite other ongoing issues, and her strength and boundaries had brought Piper to a new level of love and understanding.

And now it might be the place she proposed. Heart pounding, she went through the motions of waiting to be seated while trying not to give herself away. Isabella stood gracefully beside her, pleasantly quiet. There was no telling what was on her mind, but it didn’t seem negative.

The waitress came and led them to their table, but Isabella politely protested. Can we have a booth? She looked to the corner. How about that one?

Sure.

A moment later, they were seated in the far back corner. The restaurant was already fairly empty, as most had gone home for the summer, but the position of their booth gave them almost total privacy. Piper liked that. For the moment, though, she needed a breather to fight her nervousness. I’ve gotta go to the bathroom.

Isabella smiled. Alright.

Piper tried not to melt right there in her seat. She’d done her own makeup and dress to the extreme, trying to look as pretty as she could, but Isabella had no idea what was coming and still looked incredible. How was it possible for a real person to be so attractive? The perfect shade of red lipstick, her hair done to perfection, her black dress tight and clinging below incredible cleavage… fighting heat and dizziness, Piper got up and headed to the bathrooms.

There, in the back hallway, she nearly ran into the guy she’d been looking for.

He took a moment to recognize her, but, when he did, he smiled broadly. Hey! How’s it going?

Danny, right? she asked.

He nodded, happy she’d remembered. How’d things turn out between you and the drunk blonde?

Piper gave a toothy anxious smile and brought out the ring box.

His eyes went wide. "Holy crap, girl. Tonight?"

She nodded. I don’t know how I should do it. Do I just give it to her?

He laughed loudly, but then covered his mouth for a moment. I’ve seen a lot of proposals over the years. It’s best not to get too fancy.

Okay, she said, just trying to breathe normally.

And to think, he said, squeezing her arm. I took this shift for a friend. I should already be gone for the summer. He suppressed a long squeal. I’m so excited for you! Are you freaking out?

Yeah, she whispered, the realness of the plan hitting her now that she’d confided in her waiter friend. Freaking out is an understatement.

Well, be cool, he said, sneaking a peek around the corner. You look good, she looks good. It’s gonna be a good memory.

I look good? she asked.

Of course, honey. He turned back to her. Do you want us to do anything special? Sneak the ring in a glass or something?

The thought immediately brought her a sense of relief. She knew her trembling hands would give her away the moment she reached to find the box. Would you?

I’d be mad honored, he whispered back, taking the ring and the box. He hurriedly waved someone over with wide eyes and low hisses. A female waiter about the same age approached. Piper here, from over at the back booth, wants us to bring this in an empty champagne glass during dinner.
