Holly lounged in her living room with a glass of red wine, idly watching television. Something was on, but she didn't care what.

She was bored.

She twirled a blonde hair in front of her face for a few moments… and then the doorbell rang.

Answering the door, she found an expertly made-up Asian woman in a tight black dress standing outside - the queen bee of the neighborhood housewives. She sighed. What do you want, Vera?

We should talk, the woman said, barging inside.

Holly closed and locked the front door, then followed her uninvited guest to the kitchen.

Vera found a glass, took her bottle from the counter, and poured herself a drink. Husband out of town again?

She nodded warily.

Mine too. Her guest dropped her purse and then sat on a stool at the island in the center of the kitchen, her lithe legs crossed gracefully. From her tone, she almost sounded genuinely empathetic.

Holly knew it was a sham. She repeated her question with an added sigh. What do you want, Vera?

Her black-haired guest sipped her wine for a moment, relishing the delay.

Holly wished she would hurry up, and she also knew that was probably why Vera was drawing it out. Here she was, in a loose shirt and warm grey sweatpants, and here her archenemy was, returning from a girl's night or a fundraiser or something… dressed to kill. It was an obvious power play.

Her eyes strayed down to her archenemy's impressive cleavage. They had to be fake, right? Her breasts were large, round, firm, and absolutely perfect, and the not-so-secret envy of all the other housewives in the neighborhood. It was hard to be sure if they were real… a husband with money could get a woman certain things… but a husband with a shitload of money could get a certain woman.

And that woman was Vera.

Vera let her stare for a bit, likely aware of her jealous thoughts. When she finally spoke, it was with a subtle nastiness. I'm sure you've noticed that the girls haven't really been taking your calls lately.

Holly frowned.

Well, her guest continued. We had a great time tonight, out on the town. You could have been there.

She sighed. And I'm sure you're here to tell me why I wasn't.

Vera gave an exasperated and feigned smile. To be honest, I just want you to quit being a bitch.

Oh. There it is. She snorted. I'm a bitch, right. She upended her glass, downing the rest of her wine, and then she pulled another bottle from a cupboard. Twisting it open quickly with an opener, she imagined her squeezing and twisting motions involved her visitor's neck. Let's get this conversation started, then. Tell me about how horrible I am.

See? Vera said, watching her pour another very full glass of wine. Can you even hear yourself? You're vindictive and biting, and I haven't even said anything yet.

Besides calling me a bitch, you mean.

Yes, besides that. Not to be outdone, the black-haired woman downed the contents of her glass, and then refreshed it with the rest of her poached bottle. You're just not being a team player. You don't… fit in.

She gave her guest a dour look. You mean I don't do what you say.

Vera laughed indignantly, as if she couldn't believe what had just been said to her. She ran a tongue visibly across her upper lip reflexively, tracing her cherry red lipstick. Well, if we're going to blunt about it, then yeah.

Holly laughed. That's the first honest thing you've ever said to me.

Even if you tell the girls, they won't believe you.
