    Chapter 1

Mary stood in the bathroom staring alternately down at her phone and up at herself in the mirror. She was cute, right? That was the word guys always used. Not sexy or hot, but cute. It was a word she had initially prized in her teen years, but had now grown to resent by twenty six. She'd believed it to mean she was actually datable while sexy or hot girls were just for flings, but now pinning down a man she liked was becoming increasingly difficult. She and a prospect would come to restaurants or bars like this one a few times, bond, have good discussions, cuddle and watch Netflix—and then he'd get too distracted by the younger sexy and hot girls on the horizon and pull a fade.

Was it the hair? She traced out her long brown hair. She was rather proud of how good she managed to make it look on her nights out, although it was usually a tad undone and greasy when she was in for the weekend playing computer games. Maybe blonde would work better? She adjusted her glasses, momentarily considered contacts, and then gazed down at the reflection of her cleavage in the mirror; here, too, she judged not bad. These were classic B cups that, while not the ridiculous jugs a sexy girl might have, could not be demeaned. So what was it, then? She sighed and slid her phone in her pocket, choosing not to think any further about the dumb excuse her current prospect had given for not showing up to their third hang out.

It hadn't even been meant as a date. The whole group was out for dinner. As she left the bathroom and walked awkwardly back toward the table, she tried to hide her let-down expression, but her friends noticed immediately. Their reactions were all exactly what she had expected:

    Another flake?

    That sucks.

    Jeez, what a jerk.

    You'll find somebody. Don't worry.

Mary took these words as graciously as possible, and did not point out that they had said all these things multiple times before. The fact that all of her friends had long-term boyfriends made their support even less helpful; she sat through the rest of the dinner giving only polite small talk, and remained in her seat until her friends departed one by one.

Once she was alone in the restaurant, a sudden surge of dark energy hit her. She didn't have to go home like her friends. She was single, it was Saturday, and the night was really just beginning. It was a terrifying and wondrous thing to consider going somewhere social completely by herself, but a deep resentful anger inside her demanded she do something. She didn't know exactly what she needed to satiate that unhappy heat, but she guessed that she needed to prove to herself that she could be a sexy one-night stand just like the sea of younger girls who were even now heading out to the bars for the night.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk into the first hints of autumn chill, she shivered—but not because of the breeze. Without the need for someone to suggest it or plans to be made or justifications crafted for friends, she could literally walk in any direction and into any restaurant or bar. She realized she had almost never lived off the rails, so to speak, and that such constraints had kept her to a very specific range of places and activities. In fact, it felt insane that she could simply go somewhere by herself and with no prior plan. There were usually group chats, coordinated calendars, multiple opinions, and more, but now—

Heart hammering in her chest, Mary picked a direction on the cement and began walking.

What now? Oh, Lord, the complete lack of heading was daunting. Could she actually go places without looking them up online first? Without having any idea what she was getting into? Steeling herself, she turned and headed into an establishment she had passed
