Lily folded shirts as best she could, her face still burning from embarrassment. Her manager continued to move about the store, seemingly oblivious to how harsh her little speech had been.

Sarah made her way over a minute later, trying hard to look nonchalant in case the boss looked their way. Folding shirts alongside Lily, the brunette shook her head. That was way uncalled for.

Lily sighed, tucked back a lock of black hair behind her ear and kept her eyes focused on folding. "I'm just not good at upselling. I can't be like, hey, buy more overpriced crap you don't need."

Well, you kind of have to do that, Sarah countered quietly. Carolyn's talking about firing people that don't make enough sales.

Seriously?!

Cursing the new manager and fuming about the increasingly tough situation at the store, Lily did her best to hide for the rest of her shift, but she still happened to be the only one on the floor when trouble walked in.

She'd seen the woman before. The thirty-something blonde housewife was a regular at the shop, often coming in solely to buy lingerie for activities and affairs unknown. From the circulating rumors, she was an extremely demanding customer—but she was a big spender, too, so everyone just meekly catered to her needs. The overbearing woman was exactly the kind of customer she usually avoided, but it seemed there was no choice this time.

You, Asian girl. Do you have this in 32D? the woman asked, holding up a lace-frilled purple bra.

Nodding, Lily went to the back and brought out the requested size. By the time she returned, the woman had a long litany of additional items she wanted to see. Doing her best not to sigh or look flustered, Lily brought the pile of bras and panties out and kept up a polite smile.

Great, her demanding customer said. Carry them to the dressing rooms for me. The last one in the row, please. I don’t like to hear other customers changing.

Lily turned to do as she’d been told, but she couldn’t help but make a face on the way back to the farthest changing room. Just who did this woman think she was?

Over there, the woman said, following her in and closing the door.

Freezing, Lily looked between her customer and the door. Uh—

"You’re helping me try all this on, obviously. What, am I supposed to manage that huge pile myself?"

The only thing keeping her from snapping back was the thought of a big commission that might keep her from getting fired. Forcing a graceful nod, Lily carefully set down the stack of bras and panties. She reminded herself that employees sometimes helped customers try on clothes—admittedly, it was usually children or the old and infirm, but this was still within the bounds of the job. She kept telling herself that as her customer stripped off her dress nearby without a care.

I’m Veronica, the housewife said, unprompted, as she studied her underwear-clad body in the mirror. She turned and noticed the younger girl’s surprised glance. What? I’m not a total bitch, I just act that way in public while I can still get away with it.

Lily froze. You’re… you’re not that old…
