Elle frowned at her newly bent straw. Opting to skip the cracked plastic, she took a gulp of her Long Island straight from the glass. The sliding ice left a chill on her lips, but she let the sensation linger. A vague darkness tugged at her heart as she watched her two best friends gossip and quietly insult the other patrons of the sparsely populated bar.

Penny stood to her left, her already-empty drink forgotten on the small round table between them. Elle saw her own behavior reflected in the gorgeous blonde’s disdain for other people - it was only recently that she’d started to realize how negative her ‘friends’ were, and the influence they’d been having on her.

Rose laughed, idly stroked her own long black hair, and threw out another muttered insult. The guy at the bar they’d been talking about looked back as if he’d heard, and the two girls quickly turned their heads, hiding their smirks behind their hair. Elle caught the guy’s confused gaze and mouthed a silent apology. He gave a weak smile of thanks and turned back to the televisions above the bar. Penny and Rose didn’t notice the exchange – they’d already moved on to insulting an older woman who sat by herself at the other end.

Too absorbed in themselves, they didn’t notice Elle’s darkening expression, either.

Come on, Penny announced. We’re never going to find hot guys here. This place sucks. Next bar!

The blonde’s gaze fell sharply on her for a moment, as if to hit home that her words were not just a suggestion. Elle faked a smile of agreement.

Good, let’s go then.

Outside, they piled into the car. Sitting in the back, Elle contemplated her choices. Penny liked to have followers… the blonde would surely gossip, backstab, and generally ruin her life if she just tried to disappear. That wouldn’t have been a problem if they weren’t stuck in the same sorority together, and indeed the same room… too much was at stake.

Rose began talking loudly on her cellphone, trying to get some guy she knew to come meet them. Penny turned the car’s music up to full blast.

Elle set her jaw and tried not to scream. She felt trapped, and she was worried about the person she’d become if she had to spend the next four years with these girls. She was starting to regret joining a sorority… or maybe that was the answer! If she could get Penny and Rose kicked out for conduct, they’d have no hold over her… the thought brought adrenaline rushing through her veins. She wondered if she could really do something so vicious.

"Ah, Ben won’t come! Says he has to work," Rose shouted over the music, dropping her phone in her purse.

He must be gay! Penny exclaimed, laughing. We should tell people he’s gay, that’ll teach him. You don’t stand up girls like us!

Elle had to restrain herself from reaching up and attacking the smirking blonde while she was driving.

Now we’ll have to find new guys tonight, Rose said. I’ll just stop answering Ben’s texts; he’ll eventually get the hint.

Elle’s dagger stare shifted to the back of Rose’s head. The girl’s black hair shifted with her movements, and Elle wanted very badly to give it a rough pull. Instead, she sat in silence, fuming. How had she not noticed their shocking callousness before? She’d been too caught up in the newness of college, the rush of getting into a sorority… and she was feeling like getting Penny and Rose kicked out might just be the right thing to do.

The sorority initiations had had quite a bit of talk about honor and integrity, and these girls were the embodiment of the exact opposite of those values… but what could she do? Just ‘being a bitch’ wasn’t grounds for eviction.

Ah, men, Penny shouted, moving to the loud music as she drove. "It’s too bad we can’t just fuck each other!"

Rose laughed at Penny’s dirty comment, but Elle’s eyes grew wide. That was it!

The sorority had a strict conduct code, and fooling around with other girls was fairly heavy on the list of infractions. It made sense, given that they lived in a female-only house, and everyone needed to be comfortable. If she could just…
