About this ebook

The nights are chill and rough for three orphans - sexual Dyra, boastful Torvir, and caring Hoskuld - but they find that, when they are together, their insane plans actually succeed and their daring thefts somehow pay off. Together, they make a pact to steal the world piece by piece, and, by the gods, they'll lie, screw, and steal their way to the top if it's the last thing they ever do.

The first book in the Worldtheft and Lovers series follows the first romp through Shawbost and the neighboring Wizards' school of Edilon.

    Chapter 1

She awoke with a start, scrambling in the dirt. A heavy storm front loomed low on the horizon, threatening darkness and gusting chills.

Dyra, you alright? Hoskuld asked, reaching at her from his small alcove against the field’s aging wall of stones. Clad in rags like her, he looked as hungry as she felt. Her hunger burned so deeply, his blade-cut short blonde hair almost seemed edible, like so many little stalks of grain…

Torvir added an asinine comment without stirring from his curled position. She’s fine. Ask her if she’ll lay with us yet.

She gave an annoyed sigh, feeling more than a little drained. It’s just the death-dream again…

Oh. Hoskuld pulled back his hand, not exactly relieved.

The three of them feigned sleep until Torvir suddenly sat up.

    We’re gonna starve to death.

She also sat up, followed shortly by Hoskuld.

All three seemed to regard some hopeless spot on the ground between them.

All three had recently turned of age, and all three had immediately been thrown off of town welfare. Some orphans were loved by the community, some were given time to grow and take on apprenticeships… and some were not.

What are we going to do? Hoskuld asked, his jaw trembling.

Go back in time, and, this go-around, don’t screw the magistrate’s son? Dyra offered, regarding her own mistakes with dark cynicism.

He snorted. If only it were so simple.

Whose son did you screw? she asked, laughing.

He shoved her shoulder gently. You know I’m only saying since we’re so close to the end here - I’m the one, burned down old Eldkell’s stable.

She opened her mouth in a wide, disbelieving grin. I thought for sure he’d killed the one that did that.

Hoskuld said nothing, his regretful gaze back on the ground.

Screw this, Torvir interrupted. He ran a hand through his middling brown hair - grown the longest of the three, since he was the first to have been thrown out. We’re not going to starve and die like animals. We’re going to steal.

His gaze tracked the masts on the near horizon - the harbor, full of ships come to trade from distant lands.

Oh yeah? she shot back. What are we gonna steal, that they won’t just kill us for? We're anywhere near a theft, we’re dead.

A slow smirk crept across his dirty face, and he leaned close. I spy a Djokull mast. You know what pirates don’t do?

No, what don’t they do? she asked, breathing close to his face, sharing brief warmth against the chilly autumn air. Spare mercy for thieves?

Hoskuld straightened, his eyes afire. No… he interjected. No mercy for thieves… and no reporting stolen goods.

She let her face go slack in surprise.

Yes, yes! Torvir cried, leaping to his feet and lifting his fist high. A true pirate would never report a theft, lest they be laughed out of port, and regarded as easy pickings for other pirates!

Hoskuld jumped up, his chest full of bated breath, his eyes wide.

Dyra stood warily, glaring at the two of them. You’ve a plan? If we’re gonna die, I wanna die on a respectable heist. She didn’t mention the growing sense of proximity heralded in her death-dreams - the superstition was an old one; an old wives’ tale that death-dreams held some future portent. She wasn't sure she believed it, but a growing sense of desperation had seized her nonetheless. If it wasn’t the dreams, it was certainly the growing number of days without food… death hung over them like a scorned lover, enjoying the torturous wait.

Oh, I’ve got a plan, Torvir responded, an oratory passion surging through him. We’ll get on that ship, we’ll steal our weight in gold, and we’ll live free of hunger for our deserved durations - and a bit beyond that, too!

    A lovely dream, she breathed.

A crack of thunder sounded - and a torrent of freezing autumn rain suddenly unleashed itself upon them, though their inner fire for survival seemed to remain alight.

Come on! Torvir shouted. This is perfect!

Dyra held her thin body and rags close - thankfully, her clothing was too dirt-encrusted to actually hold water - and she ran after him, and after Hoskuld.

Their feet splashed through thick mud, across slick rocks, and around sparse bearberry bushes on the way to the harbor. The freezing rain often threatened to let up, sinking to low drizzles at random ebbs, but the biting curtain hid them all the way to the shore.

They’re preparing the ship, looks like they’re about to head out! Hoskuld reported, returning from his brief scouting mission down the shallow slope.

    Perfect.

Torvir gazed out at the barely visible harbor. Across the scattered buildings, they could see several bobbing masts, but nothing more.

They’re going to haul out in this storm? she asked, chattering.

Perfect cover for us, why not for them? Could be enemies waiting for them out at sea, outside neutral waters.

She nodded, surprised by Torvir’s focus. He was well-known for his oratory skills and verbal passions - but the grand causes he championed often fell by the wayside as new interests crossed his path. At least, that’s how he explained it… others called it scamming.

We need… he scanned the buildings below, his eyes lighting on the miserable rain-battered leatherworker's shop. Wine skins…

She frowned - so much for his focus. Still, what else did she have to do?

They crept down to the edge of the harbor district proper, hiding behind a copse of birch trees.

Dyra, you should sneak in and get them. Get three… no, six. Empty ones, preferably. Clean.

    She grimaced. Why me?

Well, you and the leatherworker’s son, right…?

She burned a little red despite the chill water dripping down her face. Is that what he's been saying?

    "I just
