About this ebook

Linda has started working at her new job. While it is stressful, she proves to be competent and pleases Samson. However, he finds himself more and more attracted to her, even though he doesn't like relationships in the workplace. When Jane leaves on a family emergency, Linda temporarily takes over as Samson's personal assistant, making them work closer together. When Linda faints from stress and dehydration, Samson can't help his protective side from taking over. He insists on escorting her home and then ends up staying the night. They have sex. The next morning Linda feels guilty and scared and she tells Samson that it should never have happened. This leaves Samson feeling hurt as he realizes he wants to take things seriously with Linda.

Chapter One – First Day on the Job

The seltzer water wasn’t helping Linda’s nerves at all. Her stomach was still rolling from her morning sickness that day and the thought of going to her first day of work wasn’t helping at all. She swallowed as she surveyed her appearance in the mirror. Even though she was the picture of professionalism according to just about every article written in the last five years on the subject, she was feeling incredibly underprepared.

You’re going to be fine, Stephen said. He handed his roommate a fresh bottle of seltzer water and a travel mug of coffee. Just remember to breathe.

Easy for you to say, Linda muttered. You’re always relaxed.

Not always. Just more than you.

Linda grimaced. She had hardly been the picture of zen, as of late, and she doubted that was going to change any time soon. She was way too desperate for this job after the death of her boyfriend and her recent discovery of being pregnant. But Stephen was right. She needed to breathe. And to take it one second at a time. If I don’t go now I’m going to be late, she said. Thanks for the coffee.

Anytime, said Stephen. Remember, I’m going to be working late tonight, so don’t wait up for me to order takeout.

I won’t, don’t worry. Linda smiled as she closed the apartment door behind her on the place that had always meant safety and security to her. After Joey’s death, it also meant grief and heartbreak, but she still felt safe there. And now she had to leave it for a job that she might not even have for long, considering her employer’s history with firing secretaries.

The walk to the office eased Linda’s nausea somewhat but left her feeling winded. Whether that was from being pregnant or lack of exercise, she had no idea, but she would have to ask the gynecologist about it when she went in for her first appointment next week.

Her boss, Samson Rockwell, was the head of a large marketing company and he had a reputation for ruling with an iron fist. Whether or not that was true, she had no idea, but she would have to find out soon enough.

Jane met her in the lobby again. Good morning, she said. How are you?

    Very well. And you?

    Great. Nervous?

    Incredibly.

Jane laughed, which sounded like tiny bells to Linda. "It’s normal to be nervous on the first day, but I know you’ll be fine once you get into the swing of things. There are a couple of things I want to tell you before we get
