About this ebook

Book 2

Linda has started working at her new job. While it is stressful, she proves to be competent and pleases Samson. However, he finds himself more and more attracted to her, even though he doesn't like relationships in the workplace. When Jane leaves on a family emergency, Linda temporarily takes over as Samson's personal assistant, making them work closer together. When Linda faints from stress and dehydration, Samson can't help his protective side from taking over. He insists on escorting her home and then ends up staying the night. They have sex. The next morning Linda feels guilty and scared and she tells Samson that it should never have happened. This leaves Samson feeling hurt as he realizes he wants to take things seriously with Linda.

Book 3

Still grieving for Joey, Linda is unable to move on even though she is attracted to Samson. Samson decides to give her space but at the same time tells her in every way he can that he likes her and he wants more than a fling. Linda's friends slowly draw her out of her depression and during a dinner out, she meets Paul, who tells her that Samson loves her a lot and that she needs to be careful not to hurt him. Linda slowly stops grieving and moves on. A few months later she and Samson have lunch together and then that night have dinner before winding up at his place. One year later he proposes to her.

    Tension in the Workplace

    Danielle Jamesen

Chapter One – First Day on the Job

The seltzer water wasn’t helping Linda’s nerves at all. Her stomach was still rolling from her morning sickness that day and the thought of going to her first day of work wasn’t helping at all. She swallowed as she surveyed her appearance in the mirror. Even though she was the picture of professionalism according to just about every article written in the last five years on the subject, she was feeling incredibly underprepared.

You’re going to be fine, Stephen said. He handed his roommate a fresh bottle of seltzer water and a travel mug of coffee. Just remember to breathe.

Easy for you to say, Linda muttered. You’re always relaxed.

Not always. Just more than you.

Linda grimaced. She had hardly been the picture of zen, as of late, and she doubted that was going to change any time soon. She was way too desperate for this job after the death of her boyfriend and her recent discovery of being pregnant. But Stephen was right. She needed to breathe. And to take it one second at a time. If I don’t go now I’m going to be late, she said. Thanks for the coffee.

Anytime, said Stephen. Remember, I’m going to be working late tonight, so don’t wait up for me to order takeout.

I won’t, don’t worry. Linda smiled as she closed the apartment door behind her on the place that had always meant safety and security to her. After Joey’s death, it also meant grief and heartbreak, but she still felt safe there. And now she had to leave it for a job that she might not even have for long, considering her employer’s history with firing secretaries.

The walk to the office eased Linda’s nausea somewhat but left her feeling winded. Whether that was from being pregnant or lack of exercise, she had no idea, but she would have to ask the gynecologist about it when she went in for her first appointment next week.

Her boss, Samson Rockwell, was the head of a large marketing company and he had a reputation for ruling with an iron fist. Whether or not that was true, she had no idea, but she would have to find out soon enough.

Jane met her in the lobby again. Good morning, she said. How are you?

    Very well. And you?

    Great. Nervous?

    Incredibly.

Jane laughed, which sounded like tiny bells to Linda. It’s normal to be nervous on the first day, but I know you’ll be fine once you get into the swing of things. There are a couple of things I want to tell you before we get into the office, though.

Of course. Linda followed Jane into the elevator. Jane waited until the doors were closed before speaking.

No matter what, you shouldn’t let Mr. Rockwell see you cry. And believe me, you’ll break down at least once on your first week. We all do. There’s no transition time. Everyone who works at Rockwell Marketing is expected to perform their duties as if they had been doing it for years. But Mr. Rockwell hates tears, so you must make sure you never let him see any. Same with fear.

Linda swallowed. She hated the sound of that. Okay, she said. Understood.

Also, your desk is actually right outside his office. For the purposes of the interview I had to make you think it was mine, but really I’m set up in an office adjoining his, not in the waiting room. She smiled apologetically. I hope you don’t hold that deception against me.

How could I when it got me the job? Linda smiled. I have to admit, I wasn’t prepared for an interview quite like that.

I can’t imagine you would be, Jane said. But Mr. Rockwell prefers it to a regular interview. Not only does it catch candidates off guard, but it reveals much more about their true character.

A slight shiver went down Linda’s spine. It sounded like a battle strategy than filling a job opening.

The elevator doors opened and Jane stepped out before Linda. I believe that covers all of it, she said. Your lunch break is at two and Mr. Rockwell prefers his employees—especially new employees—to stay until six unless there is an emergency.

I understand, Linda said as they arrived at the waiting room.

Jane smiled at her for a second before her eyes flicked to a corner in the ceiling. I will see you later, she said. But I know you will be fine. She slipped through the door from the waiting room to her office before Linda could ask any questions.

Just pretend you’ve been working here for years. Yeah. You can do that. She sat down at the desk and booted up the computer. Now what?

Just then the phone rang and Linda picked it up. Rockwell Marketing.

Hello, said a pleasant voice. Another secretary, I see. What happened to Kate? I liked her.

Linda bristled at his familiar tone. I’m sorry, sir, but I’m not at liberty to discuss former employees. Is there any other purpose to your call?

I need to reschedule my meeting with Mr. Rockwell, the man said, sounding significantly less pleasant. I need it to be next week and not a day later.

Yes, sir. And what is your name?

The man huffed and hung up. Linda frowned but checked the caller-ID. Maybe the number was already indexed in the computer address book. She was checking it when the phone rang again, this time from a television producer who said she absolutely must speak with Alex that second. After stalling for two minutes, she found the hold button and figured out how to call Jane’s office without dropping the other call. She patched the woman through to Jane after Jane approved, and Linda went back to
