About this series
I woke around five in the morning to find Jo fast asleep beside me. Despite not having to be at work for another four hours, I could not find it within me to get back to sleep. I had woken from a terrifyingly vivid dream in which Ben had decided to run away, and I couldn’t find him no matter where I looked. I had felt so hopeless in the dream, and it was a horrible feeling to have, even in a dream. I rose out of bed, careful not to wake Jo, and tiptoed down the short hall to Ben’s room. I creaked the door open and saw his sleeping form inside his race car bed. His small chest rose and fell peacefully. I let out a small sigh of relief, as if I was scared I wouldn’t find him in his bed.
Ben was just over four years old. I had given birth to him just under nine months after graduating from Stable College. That summer, I had an internship at a small publication company. I stayed with the company after that. It was a great place to work. I adored my coworkers and my boss, it was an interesting job, I was reading and editing, doing what I loved, and I made enough money to support both me and Ben. Though, when Ben came along, I did find it significantly harder to go to work and make enough money. Soon after that, however, I started dating Jo. That came about rather unexpectedly. But after Jack had left me and the baby to work abroad for his family’s company, Jo was very supportive and him and I came to be very close friends. I guess it would only take a little time until we started dating. And he was so supportive and loving with Ben. After Jack left, I hit rock bottom emotionally. He promised he would be back within a few months, and that everything was going to work out perfectly. He never came back.

I pulled into the driveway with a hurried sense of urgency, eager to get to the mailbox. It should be here today. My acceptance - or, God forbid, my rejection - to Stable College in Northern Maine. It was the one school I actually cared about getting into out of the seven I applied to. It was a small school compared to a University, but it was of the larger colleges I had come across during my search. Jack was applying there too, and I had always hoped we would stick together past high school since the start of our friendship freshman year. I think he thought the same thing, though he would never admit to it out loud. My feet nearly slid on the slick ground, wet from the first of spring’s cold rain, as I hurried myself to open the mailbox. A fat stack of various envelopes sat inside, waiting for a human hand to rescue them from the cold tin can they were subject to. I snatched them up and quickly sorted through various junk, mostly addressed to my mom. Nothing. I sighed with disappointment. A knot formed in my stomach; the tardiness of the letter felt like a bad sign. I shook my head, forcing negative thoughts out of my mind. It would probably just be here tomorrow. Mail arrives late sometimes.

There I was. Walking through the open door to the Jewel — the nicest, most expensive restaurant in a several town radius — followed close behind by my best friend of almost eight years and arguably who could be the love of my life. Needless to say, I felt a little in over my head and the swarm of butterflies in my stomach was inevitable. As I made my way into the restaurant, I couldn’t help but let me jaw drop at the incredible layout of its interior. Mahogany wood furnishes drowned every inch of wall, pillar, ceiling, floor and table space. The tables lining the walls were separated by high backed booths and the ones that filled the rest of the restaurant left plenty of space in between one another to provide adequate privacy between the occupying parties. Every table was lined with a marvelous maroon colored table cloth, topped with several real burning candles. I marveled at how they possibly could have stayed lit all night. Giant jeweled chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting a low golden light throughout the restaurant. Paired with a small band playing smooth jazz near a beautiful grand piano in the corner, the ambience was one made for rich CEO’s and the traveling movie star out on vacation at their coastal boat house. I felt very out of place for a poor college student. I wondered how Jack expected to pay for the coming meal, and then I remembered that his parents owned one of the most successful companies in Europe. Then I wondered why I hadn’t been taking advantage of that before.
