About this ebook

Book 2

Mel Vaughn is slowly working to pick up the pieces and get her life back together.  She’s already landed a job at Hoshi Electronics, a prestigious company that could open a lot of doors for her.  Everything seems to be going well, except for the fact that she is hopelessly attracted to the CEO, Carter Byron.  Even worse, there is no avoiding Carter.  After sitting in on a marketing meeting, he takes an interest in her ideas.  Then he takes an interest in her.  Mel ends up falling for his charms, and they share a moment of passion in Carter’s office.  Mel is sure that it’s a one-time thing, but the CEO has other plans.

Things get more complicated when Mel’s boss suspects her of becoming intimate with Carter.  As if that isn’t enough, a ghost from her past returns to haunt her.  Mel can’t seem to escape her old life, and now she’s wondering if the new one she’s started is going to come crashing down around her.

Book 3

After Mel Vaughn’s ex-fiancé gets hired at the same company where she works, her life starts to spiral out of control.  Now she has to juggle being pregnant and running a marketing campaign with her old boyfriend – Kyle – and her new boyfriend, Carter.  Even her relationship with Carter, the CEO, isn’t going like she’d hoped.  When she catches him with another woman on his arm, Mel reaches her breaking point.

With help from her parents and her friend, Nancy, Mel begins to reevaluate her life and her priorities.  She steps up and takes back control, allowing everything to fall into place.  Then Kyle gets fired.  Later that night, he attacks Mel.  When Carter saves her, she realizes she has loved him from the beginning.  With him by her side, she’s ready to move on with her life, and with motherhood.

    Chapter One – The Interview

Mel Vaughn tried not to fidget in her seat while Rick Polaski, head of marketing at Hoshi Electronics, perused her resume.  She was glad that she had scheduled this interview for the afternoon.  Her morning sickness was getting worse, and the last thing she wanted was to throw up and ruin her chances.

I have to admit, your resume is a little light, Ms. Vaughn, Rick said finally.  We brought you in for an interview because of your cover letter.  You sounded very ambitious.  Can you expand upon those ambitions for me?

Mel hesitated to answer that question.  Two weeks ago, she would have had a prepared speech ready about her desire to open her own marketing firm.  She’d dreamed about it for so long, she felt like she already had the pitch ready and waiting.

    But now…

Now she had three positive pregnancy tests looming in the back of her mind.  Could she really handle being a single mom?  What she needed now, what her child needed, was stability.  She couldn’t risk everything to start her own business when that might mean endangering her child.

Can I be honest with you? Mel asked finally.

I’d encourage it, Rick said with a half smile.

Right… Mr. Polaski, two weeks ago I would have told you about my dream to open my own marketing firm.  I would operate out of a private office, contracting out my services to various businesses.  We… I would cater to everyone from restaurateurs to bigger companies, such as Hoshi.  After I had made a name for myself, I would look into branching out, expanding my company across the nation, maybe even taking on some international contracts.

That sounds like an exciting and well thought out plan, Rick commented.  What changed in the last two weeks?

I got pregnant, sir, Mel said.  It wasn’t part of my… plan.  But the way I see it, I still need a job.  I need experience in the field before I can open my own business.  Nothing has changed about my wants and dreams.  If anything, knowing I have a kid on the way has made me more determined to get a job where I can work hard and establish a career for myself.  My child will be proud of me, Mr. Polaski.  I’m going to make sure of that.  No amount of morning sickness would prevent me from coming into work on time and doing my job to the best of my ability.  I came here to impress, and that’s what I intend to do.

Rick leaned back in his chair and considered her with an intrigued expression.  Mel met his gaze without fear.  She had nothing to lose now.  Her cards were on the table.  The only thing she hadn’t told him was that her dream had originally been shared by her ex-fiancé, Kyle.  The day after he’d proposed to her, she had found her roommate naked in his bed.  Her chest still hurt when she thought about it, and it was for this reason that she hadn’t told Kyle about the pregnancy yet.  There was no doubt the baby was his, but she couldn’t stand the idea of having him back in her life.

Rick opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off when the door to his office flew open.  A familiar looking man marched inside, followed by a very flustered secretary.

Mr. Byron to see you, the secretary said lamely, before making a hasty retreat.

Rick stood up and greeted the CEO of the company, Carter Byron, with a firm handshake.  Mel tried not to stare too openly.  He had looked handsome in his picture on the Hoshi website.  Now she knew that the picture hadn’t done him justice.  His hair was perfectly combed, his suit only partially obscuring an obviously fit body.  He towered over Rick Polaski, his dark eyes intense.  Even his complexion was flawless.  His tanned, olive skin was perfectly smooth.  Yet he looked like a rough person, someone you didn’t want to cross.  Mel felt a shiver run down her spine and settle between her legs.  She crossed them tighter and averted her gaze.

How can I help you, sir? Rick asked.

I want an update on how the interviews are going, Carter Byron said, in a deep, enticing voice.  Any prospects yet?

We’ve got several more over the next few days, sir.  I’m actually conducting an interview right now with a very promising candidate.

Carter, who had been ignoring Mel up until that point, finally looked down at her.  He raised an eyebrow, his eyes flickering over her, sizing her up.

What makes her so promising? he asked, not looking back at Rick.

W-well, she’s very driven, came the stammered reply.  Her resume is light, but she graduated at the top of her class and she has demonstrated a knowledge of –

I don’t need demonstrated knowledge, Carter said, addressing Mel now.  I don’t need ‘lots of potential’ or ‘good work ethic.’  Our stocks are faltering, thanks to our last marketing campaign, which cost my company hundreds of thousands of dollars.  The ensuing embarrassment was pricier.  Product recalls, official statements and apologies for the press.  The whole thing was an utter failure.

Mel nodded.  She vaguely remembered the recall.  Her parents had had to return their microwave or something.

I don’t need another failure, Carter continued, his gaze jumping to Rick for just a moment before returning to Mel.  I don’t have the time or the money to accommodate one.  So if you’re here looking for a ‘great learning opportunity,’ I suggest you search elsewhere.

He straightened up, obviously not waiting for a response.  But Mel gave him one anyway.  This was a big company, and she certainly wasn’t going to get anywhere if she let herself get bullied.  Even if he was the CEO, he had no right to try to intimidate her like that.

I’m not going anywhere, she said.  I’m not leaving this chair until I finish my interview.  And I’m definitely not going to shrink away from a challenge just because you loom over me and tell me I can’t do it.  This job was made for me, and I intend to prove that in any way I can.

Carter Byron looked back down at her, his expression softening ever so slightly.  He looked almost surprised when she didn’t turn her gaze away from his.  It was clear he was used to being able to scare people.  Even Rick had lost his nerve after two minutes
