    Sleeping with the Boss

    Chapter One – Mr. Winchester

Nice to meet you again, Miss Lee.

Brent Winchester crossed the office towards the desk where Rebecca was still sitting, smiling. Of course she was smiling. Adrienne realized she had no idea that she had run into Brent already without realizing it. They had collided into the hallway after her first interview when she had been looking for the bathroom. He had been a jerk to her, making Adrienne feel stupid for getting turned around in a building she had never been in before.

But that wasn’t what was making her feel so embarrassed right now. Sure, Brent had been a jerk. Maybe it had been a one off thing, although looking at his serious face right now Adrienne wasn’t so sure. The fact was that she had had a very sexual dream about him a couple of nights ago, leaving her breathless and wide awake in the middle of the night. The way Brent looked at her was as if he knew this somehow, even though Adrienne knew that that couldn’t be possible.

She stood up, hoping she didn’t look like a robot and offered her hand for Brent to shake. His face was blank, devoid of any expression. The fact he had brought up her being lost in the building again had merely bounced off of Adrienne because she was so mortified at seeing him again.

Brent shook her hand. His skin was warm to the touch and Adrienne was praying that her face was not flushed.

Is this the last interview? He said to Rebecca although he was still looking at Adrienne.

    Yes, sir.

Great. I have to leave on a trip tonight so I want to make a decision before I leave. His tone was clipped and matter of fact.

I’ll leave you then, sir. Rebecca said, giving Adrienne a small wave as she headed to a side door.

Adrienne wanted her to stay. The last thing she wanted was to be alone with this billionaire with a cold attitude and the ability to give her dreams. Was she imagining it or had the office grown colder just by being alone with him? Brent took a step back, as if he was eying her before sitting down where Rebecca had been sitting.

I surprise each person in the interview, He began as Adrienne sat stiffly back down, I want to gauge how much they want this and how well we interact since we will be spending a lot of time together.

A lot of time together. Yes, he was right, wasn’t he? Whatever Adrienne was feeling, she realized she needed to get over it because she wanted this job. Regardless of what some stupid dream had done to her, she was so close to getting this job.

You mentioned a daughter? Brent said, shifting gears suddenly.

Yes, sir, When he didn’t reply, Adrienne spoke again, Joanna.

    Are you married?

    No, sir.

    Divorced?

No, sir. Adrienne replied, trying to keep an edge out of her voice. She failed to see what this had to do with anything.

Brent looked thoughtful for a moment which was the first expression Adrienne had seen on his face, You mentioned that you want this for the right reasons. So other people do not? The other four want this for bad reasons?

They might not want it for pure reasons.

    But you do? He demanded.

Adrienne realized he was trying to trip her up. She refused to let him trip her up and instead took a deep breath to maintain her focus. He looked as still as a statue yet was still radiating a warmth. How was that even possible?

I want it because I want to grow with your company. I want a steady job so I can provide for my daughter.

And why do they want it?

Because of the status that would come with working here. Adrienne replied, hoping that it got the point across without being crass or rude.

Brent looked thoughtful again. His phone was vibrating on the desk now but he ignored it. Adrienne imagined that it must go off all the time.

It will be a busy job, He said to her, I have a ton of work that needs to be done on a daily basis. I need organizational skills to be at the best they can be. I need you ready to have a baby-sitter on hand if you have to work late or have to leave the country with me. I don’t want your child to be a hindrance.

Something about the tone of his voice and the way he suggested that Joanna could be a hindrance rubbed Adrienne the wrong way. She would never think of her daughter in that manner. Brent seemed to know what she was thinking because he had a bemused expression on his face.

My daughter won’t be an issue, Adrienne replied, I’ll have everything in order.

Great. Rebecca spoke highly of you but I’ll be making the final choice.

He stood up, as if the interview was now over. Adrienne stood up as well, feeling as if she had somehow blown in. Was Brent impressed with her at all? It didn’t feel as if they talked about anything important and barely discussed the job.

Brent crossed the office and stopped in front of her, holding out his hand again. Adrienne shook it. The warmth flowed through her again. His skin was hot to the touch, as if he had a fever just underneath the surface of his skin.

Thanks for coming in, Adrienne. He was staring at her again in a way that made her eyes drop.

    Thank you for your time.

As she turned away from him, her dream came back to her in vivid color. The hallway. The ice on the walls. Brent sliding his hand down her underwear. Adrienne could feel herself flush as she opened up the office door and shut it behind her.

Maybe it is okay if I don’t get it, she tried to tell herself as she made her way to the elevator, I don’t know if I could work for someone like that.
