Adrienne was looking at the bags under her eyes and frowning. She couldn’t believe how terrible she had been sleeping the past weekend. Every time sleep promised to pull her in, a dream would begin, dark and twisted and Adrienne would wake up in a cold sweat.

Had it really just been two full days since Brent had come to her? She had been busy cleaning up after a blizzard had come through. Her hair had been messy and her clothes wrinkled when someone had knocked on the door. Opening it up and seeing Brent on the doorstep had been one of the biggest surprises of her life.

What followed after was even more shocking. Brent had been scared, looking for comfort after something had happened with his father. It was the same emotions she had seen the night he had been talking to his father on the phone outside of Fathoms. It was the emotion that showed her Brent was not cruel and cold. He only was to protect himself.

Adrienne closed her eyes. She could still feel his lips on her skin. She could feel the way that he had felt inside of her. They had clung to each other, climaxing together. Then, like a terrified animal, he was gone. Adrienne had watched him go and waited to hear from him over the weekend.

Yet there had been nothing. Radio silence. Maybe it had been stupid to think that he would have called her or made any sort of attempt to see her. Yet Adrienne had been hopeful all weekend.

Now it was Monday morning and she didn’t know what she would be walking into. Would he be willing to discuss what had happened? Would he want to discuss his father with her? Adrienne wanted to help him in any way that he would let her. But Brent always kept his card close to his heart.

Surely he will want to discuss things, Adrienne reassured herself, this isn’t something he can just get over without a second thought. This meant something.

It was those words she told herself again as she stepped in the elevator taking her up to the top floor of the Data Rise headquarters. She tried to remain calm. There would be no use in looking like a flushed little scared girl when she saw him.

When Adrienne stepped inside the waiting room, the door to her office was open. She saw Miranda talking to Brent, their heads bowed close together as they talked about something quietly. Oh god, is he breaking up with her here? Adrienne thought to herself as she walked into her office.

The two of them looked up. Brent’s face was blank and utterly unreadable. Miranda gave her a big smile which only put Adrienne on edge.
