Bryant tore through the crowd. He reached Cassie and spun her around to face him. He stared boldly at her. His eyes blazing like fire. She stared back at him, unable to collect her spinning thoughts. Then all at once they embraced each other. They held one another so tight. It seemed as if they would never break apart. I missed you. He whispered into her ear. I missed you. She repeated back in a high pitched tone.

There was so much he wanted to tell her, but he just couldn't find the words. He could feel her father's gaze burning into his back. Reluctantly, he let Cassie go. The way you stormed over here. It seemed like you were pissed. She said. I am. I'm pissed at myself. How could I have forgotten that today was your birthday? I didn't even bring you anything. He lied. Oh, don't worry about that. She said.

But he wanted to worry about it. He couldn't stand bringing more pain into her life. There was so much he wanted to tell her. Of course, he couldn't. So he shrugged.  Maybe we can get some coffee later. If, you know. He mumbled. She took a moment to think about her response. Then said, That would be just fine.

The party seemed to go on. Bryant had chatted with Mr. Lucas for long enough. There was nothing more he wanted to say to Mr. Lucas. He'd lost Cassie in the crowd. She had wondered off shortly after their conversation. He could just barely see her blond hair shining like a beacon through a sea of red headed women. He had never seen these women before.

Who are those women that Cassie is chatting with? Bryant asked a tall man who had come up beside him. That's the Frederick sisters. Quadruplets, they are. The man replied and then chuckled. I bet Walter Frederick had a heck of a time raising those girls. He added. How do they know Cassie? Bryant asked.

Mr. Lucas and Walter Frederick go back years and years. I would say maybe even high school. The girls came to work for Mr. Lucas at sixteen. While they were not real employees at the time, they did help keep things clean. When they became of legal age to employ, Mr. Lucas gave them position as sale representatives.
