    Chapter One: A loveless marriage

    Dear Cassandra Lucas,

My sincerest apologies. Due to the passing of my mother, Tabatha Young, I am forced to stay in Hong Kong and run her business. Cassie, You're better off. After all, I could never believe – for one moment – that I had actual feelings for you. Our relationship was nothing more than convenient. It meant nothing. I wish you well.

    Cordially,

    Bryant Young

    CEO and Owner

Their relationship, convenient? She had loved him more than she had words to say. He was everything to her. She rubbed her belly as she thought about this. It had been nine months since she received the letter. Yet, every heart shattering word stuck in her memory. How could he say their relationship had only been convenient? How could he say it meant nothing? How could he not love her? When they had made this beautiful baby together?

It didn't make sense to her. He was acting like a completely different person. Well, she would not be raising this child alone. She was engaged to Ryan J. Stevens. She had caught back up with him. They kept in touch for a while. She found out that he was a student in her college. He was a junior because he had enrolled later than Bryant and she did.

She did not love him. Not like she loved Bryant. She had gone to prom with him, but she had only did so, because she didn't think Bryant would have gone with her. She could be a little dominant sometimes. She didn't think Bryant liked her because of that. He had never shown interest in her. So she had gone with Ryan.

Now she would marry him because he was a nice guy. He would make a great father she could tell. He was dependable, she needed that. He cared for her, she knew this to be true. All these good qualities, and yet, she couldn't bring herself to truly love him.

She was living temporarily with him and his mother. Ryan didn't like the dorms. He found the small space to be claustrophobic. So he drove back and forth to college from his mom's house. He promised her that they would buy a two bedroom house soon. But right now college was sucking their finances.

Cassie laid in bed. She had taken time away from the university until her child was born. Even then, she'd probably wait a year before going back. Cassie pulled the sheets up over her head. She shut her eyes and began to drift off. Her head filled with strange dreams that caused her to toss and turn. At last her eyes flew open. She sighed and got up to make some tea. While she was up, she checked on her son. He was sleeping away.

    ***

Bryant had buried his mother in the Chinese fashion. Following the customs and ceremonies. Tabatha Young, had been buried in one of the nicest burial spots, at least that was what Bryant was told. She had died of leukemia. Bryant didn't even know that his mother had been ill.

He had cried non-stop for six weeks after her death. She had been so young at fifty-six years of age. It had been nine months since her death and he was still grieving her loss. He had to suck it up because he had a business to run. He had to keep his mother's dream and her legacy alive.

Bryant had just gotten into the office when rain pounded against the windows. Previously, it had been a sunny day. Not a cloud in the sky. Now it came down in buckets. Bryant was the new CEO and owner of the company, Splendid Suns of Culture. The company sold home furnishing with beautiful Chinese artwork depicted on them. Demand was high. As a result, Bryant was always busy. He poured over a stack of important business papers. However, he just couldn't focus. He kept thinking about the letter he had Yin Cho write nine months ago. He had put some awful things in that letter. But he had too. He needed Cassie to move on. It was the best thing he could have done for her.

A bolt of lightning flashed and soon after, the clash of thunder followed. Bryant pushed the business papers aside. He threw on the yellow rain jacket he'd brought with him. He left his office and ran to his car. The rain showed no signs of stopping or letting up. Bryant started the car and drove out of the parking lot.

He had no idea where he was driving too. He just needed to drive. Needed to leave it all behind, if only for an hour or so. The section of road lead to Victoria Harbor. Bryant followed the road, thinking of only the beautiful ocean. He liked to sat on the docks and be mesmerized by the trillions of sparkles that glistened off the surface. The water was so tranquil, it made him feel as if he's problems had gone. But the tranquility was not to last.

Cassie, who was always on his mind, flattered back into his conscience mind. She was still in the university when he left. He didn't think she'd like living in Hong Kong. It was a much different experience. She might not have even adjusted well. Besides, he didn't want to take her away from her family or her way of life. In the end, he decided that he did the right thing. This was what he needed. The validation that he had truly done what was best. And so, with his mind clear, he drove back to his office.

The rain had cleared up when he finally got back to the office. The sun peered out through the clouds casting golden light on everything. Cars honked in the distanced. The city was alive with commuters. It reminded him of being back in New York. He tried not to think about it as he took the elevator to his office.

He walked inside the mediocre room and tossed his yellow rain coat into a corner of the room. Mr. Young. Said a female voice. His office chair
