Chapter One – Mental Health Days

Mel Vaughn was lying in bed, curled up on her side, ignoring her phone.  It had been ringing so much over the past few days that she had put it on silent, but every now and then she noticed the screen lighting up out of the corner of her eye.  It was a Tuesday morning.  She had followed proper procedure for calling in sick to work – second day in a row – but that wasn’t stopping the onslaught of calls.

She brought her knees up to her chest and drew the covers over her head.  How had her life gotten like this?  Nothing was simple anymore.

The last day she’d gone in to work – the previous Friday – she’d been introduced to a new coworker.  That coworker just happened to be her ex-fiancé, Kyle Snyder, who had followed up his marriage proposal with a healthy dose of infidelity.

Mel hadn’t been able to face him.  Not now.  Not when everything was going so well.

Not when she was carrying his child.

Is that why he’d found her?  Gotten hired at the same company as her?  Was he trying to weasel his way back into her life?

She hadn’t told her parents about Kyle’s sudden appearance.  They had been busily and diligently helping her move into her new apartment, and she hadn’t wanted to ruin their excitement at seeing her new place.

Mel lifted her head slightly and looked around, noting the boxes that needed unpacking, the clothing that was strewn on the floor in open defiance of the nearby dresser.  She had been excited about this place, too.  It was small, but clean, and the building was relatively new.  It had been a sign that she was moving on, that her life was getting better.

Even through the covers, she could see the dull glow of her phone lighting up with a new incoming call or text.  Mel groaned and reached out for it, flipping it over so the screen was facedown.

Two minutes later, her door buzzed.

    Someone was downstairs.

Mel frowned into her pillow.  Everyone who could possibly be standing outside ringing her bell right now was currently supposed to be at work.  She took solace from the fact that at least it couldn’t be Kyle.  He didn’t know her new address, and she intended to keep it that way.

Groaning, she got out of bed and went over to the intercom by the door.  Her stomach was growling ferociously.  When was the last time she’d eaten?

Who is it? she called hoarsely.

Garrett Sanders, Ms. Vaughn.  I’m Carter Byron’s chauffer.

With all due respect, what is Mr. Byron’s chauffer doing at my apartment? she asked.

Mr. Byron is concerned about your health.  He sent me to escort you to his private physician.

The questions Mel wanted to ask didn’t seem appropriate for an intercom conversation, so she told the chauffer she’d be
