    CHAPTER ONE

Abby refused to let herself look up. She knew he was standing in the doorway, watching her with those coffee-black eyes, a slight smile on his beautiful mouth. She knew that he would be eyeing her as if she was something good to eat, hungry for her in a way that made her heart sing. Still she didn't look up.

She knew that if she looked up, she would lose.

Instead, she buried her nose in her book. It was really fascinating stuff, all about the cave paintings that were being discovered throughout the UAE and the Middle East. They were the record of a people long lost, their only shout-out towards a future that they could not imagine.

She was actually beginning to get into the work, which spoke well for her chosen major, when she felt a whisper of breath against the back of her neck.

So studious all the time, Adir al-Omari said. Surely you can spare a moment for someone who wants to take you out to dinner?

I don't know, Abby said, not looking up from her book. Are you going someplace fun?

It was entertaining to flirt, but she found that she couldn't keep it up. The cool as ice words left her mouth, but then she couldn't resist closing her book and looking up into Adir's upside down face as he looked down at her.

Adir was just four years older than her own eighteen, a gorgeous man who looked as if he had stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine. He was tall and broad like all the men of Hayal's ruling dynasty, but there was an ease to his gestures and his sweetness that belied his royal roots.

Here in the halls of the UAE Embassy in Washington, DC, he was a breath of fresh air, and he often told her how much better he liked America than the stuffy formality of Hayal.

But it's your home, she had said during one of their first late night talks. Surely you miss it a little?

It is hard to miss a place where you're very little beyond being a spare, he said judiciously. When she had winced on his behalf, he took her hand, squeezing it gently.

Do not look so tragic, he said kindly. There are many advantages to being the third son of the al-Omari family. Among other things, I am generally allowed to roam far and wide, and if no one remembers that I exist, no one makes me stay home to learn all the ridiculous protocols either.

He had paused, a slight smile on his face. Perhaps that was when she had started to fall in love with him.

No one tells me who I can like, either.

It was a wildly inauspicious beginning in some ways. He was the son of the ruling sheikh of the city-state of Hayal. She was the daughter of the embassy's cleaning woman who often showed up to give her mother a ride home from work.

He had come upon her reading her favorite art book on Giza in Egypt, and after that, the rest was history.

Are you so mercenary? he asked teasingly, planting a kiss on her forehead. Will you not say hello unless I wine and dine you at the finest restaurant in the capital?

Maybe a little, she said with dignity. I am a girl of value and family. I won't acknowledge you unless you get me a hamburger, fries, and a milkshake.

Far from being homesick for the foods of his childhood, Amir had dove into the foods of the United States. He had a special weakness for American fast food, and she never resisted the chance to tease him for it.

Oh? And what will all of that and a bag of donuts get me? he asked, flirting outrageously. Then his voice dropped. Will it get me what it got me on Thursday?

Abby laughed, but now there was a pink tinge to her cheeks.

That … that wasn't for the donuts, she sputtered, and Adir wrapped his arms around her more tightly.

I know, he whispered. Of course I know. Your regard is precious beyond rubies, the least touch of your hand priceless beyond pearls.

It should have sounded ridiculous. It should have sounded fake and corny and contrived. If she had heard the words from anyone else, she would have assumed that she was being swindled in some way, shape, or form.

However, from Adir, there was an old-world courtliness to it. When they had started their romance, he had looked at her seriously and said that he would never toy with her.

    What I say, I mean.

Abby looked at him, her green eyes grave.

Anyone can say that, she said.

On my honor as the son of the Sheikh, he said fiercely. On the honor of my family, I swear to you that I do not do this lightly.

In that moment, her heart had swelled with love for him. She had believed him, completely, and from there, their affair had grown.

I believe you, she said as Adir swung into the chair next to her. I'm just playing.

There are better games we could be playing, he said with a wink.

She started to answer, but then his attention was caught by her book. He paged through it curiously.

They don't have the cave in Hayal listed yet.

She blinked. There's a cave in Hayal?

They just found it a year ago. Supposedly one of the biggest in the region. I don't know much about it though. Perhaps we can go someday.

Abby bit her lip. She knew that he meant well. She knew that his heart was as big as the sky. However, some part of her knew that he would never be aware of the gap between the two of them when he could offer up trips half-way across the world without thinking about it, and she could only afford to pay for their fast food some of the time.

Maybe someday, she said instead. Listen, I need to take my mom home tonight. After that, do you want to go out? I have a long weekend.

I'd like to go out, Adir agreed, setting her book aside, but after that, I most definitely want to stay in. What do you say to that?

Abby felt a ripple of heat spread through her body. They had only been lovers in the physical sense for a few weeks, but there was already a part of her that responded to him. He was her first lover, but she knew that there was more to it than that. There was something needy about the way they touched each other, something that felt deep.

I say that that sounds amazing.

That night, she drove her mother home from the embassy, listening with half an ear until she heard a name that made her frown.

He's terrible, he terrorizes the staff until they give in to his ridiculous demands, and he gets so angry that two of the best girls have quit.

Her mother shook her head in disgust, and Abby chewed her lip. Her mother was a perceptive woman, and she glanced at her daughter.

Have you run into Abdul al-Omari, honey?

No, Mom, she said, as honestly as she could.

Her mother nodded with relief. Good. You stay clear, especially when you are putting your head together with that boy. That man is nothing but bad feelings.

Abdul al-Omari was Adir's uncle, and whenever Adir had something bad to say about his homeland, he could use his uncle as an example.

Bitter, racist, angry, and furious to be sent so far from home, he said, shaking his head. He's my father's youngest brother, and if that's what I have to look forward to, I'll just start hitchhiking my way to Canada under an assumed name now.

She had laughed at the time, but more than once, she had sensed Abdul looking her over as she had waited for Adir or ran an errand for her mother. There was something unsettling about the man's piercing gaze, and she knew that her mother's advice was very good.

When she dropped her mother off, she made her way to the Phoenix, the club where she had agreed to meet Adir.

In the car, she shrugged off the cardigan, revealing a tight black T-shirt with a lace-up back and a pair of jeans so tight they looked painted on. She had less curves than she would have liked, but she thought the outfit would at least get Adir's
