Danger at the top of THE WORLD

The next day started bright and sunny. Sally was pleased to find the members of her group waiting excitedly outside the hotel as their coach pulled up. She didn’t quite understand what the buzz was about until one of the travellers explained how important the Reichenbach Falls were to the Sherlock Holmes stories.

As she walked up and down the aisle of the coach, chatting to her band of holidaymakers, she made a mental note to make a start on the famous books when she returned home – they would make exciting reads knowing she’d visited one of their locations.

She kept a careful eye on Simon, only stopping to ask if he was enjoying his trip. He answered with a few words and went back to the travel guide on his lap.

‘He’s a rum one and no mistake,’ Rona Hampton nudged Sally’s arm and nodded in Simon’s direction. Sally blushed, knowing Rona’s voice had travelled the length of the coach.

Looking over at Rona’s husband Cedric, she changed the subject. ‘So, tell me, what it is you write in your notebook?’

It sounded more nosy than interested and she immediately regretted asking.

Cedric Hampton looked at her and frowned. He seemed to be miles away. ‘Nothing of any interest to you, young lady,’ he replied, closing the book and putting it in his pocket.

Sally felt her the holiday inspector. She couldn’t think of any other reason he’d be writing notes all the time.
