    Chapter 1

Mrs. Jameson, do you have any idea where your husband might be?

Hannah looked up from the pillow on her lap to the officer sitting across her, a man with dark brown hair and eyes who looked to be in his early thirties. What was his name again? Somehow, she had failed to catch it.

    Mrs. Jameson?

No, she answered truthfully, her gaze shifting back to her hands.

It was a stupid question. If she had known where Drew was, she wouldn’t have called the cops. She would have simply waited for him to come home.

Mr. Reed, was it? The officer turned to the other man in the room, Kyle—her brother. Do you have any ideas where Mr. Jameson might be?

Kyle shook his head. Trust me. If I knew where he was, he’d be here right now.

Hannah believed that. Even though Kyle was not her biological brother—he was only her stepbrother from her mother’s second marriage—he had always looked out for her, solving her problems for her whenever he could, from broken dolls to homework to bad dates. That annoyed her sometimes, especially as she got older, but right now she was simply glad to have him by her side.

The officer glanced back at her. Can you think of any reason why your husband would leave?

Leave? Yes. Leave this way? No. She shook her head.

How would you say your relationship has been re—?

Oh, come on, officer, Kyle cut him off. Don’t you think that’s irrelevant? So what if Hannah and Drew haven’t been getting along lately? Married couples don’t get along most of the time but husbands rarely disappear.

    The officer nodded.

Hannah glanced at Kyle, grateful to him for sparing her from answering that question. Having an overprotective older brother did have its advantages.

Alright. Let me just repeat what you’ve told me. The officer flipped a page of his notebook. Your husband was supposed to return from his business trip two nights ago but he hasn’t showed up since, nor has he called. You tried calling him several times but you couldn’t reach him.

That’s right, Hannah said. And he never turns off his phone.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Hannah paused. Well, I don’t know if this is important, but usually when he returns from a business trip he passes by this one Chinese restaurant before he comes home. He usually orders some food there for him to eat when he gets home and also for Dolly.

    The dog?

Hannah nodded. He always takes out beef and broccoli for her. Says it’s his way of making it up to her for being away.

From the corner of her eyes she saw Kyle frown, but he didn’t say anything.

What’s the name of the restaurant?

    Goldmoon.

The officer scribbled down the name on his notebook. Anything else?

None that I can think of.

Well, if you think of anything that might help us find him, give me a call. The officer stood up and handed her his
