Shanika Patrice

(Shanika Patrice) Before she decided to transform into Shanika Patrice, erotic and romantic fiction extraordinaire, she was using her writing powers in the corporate copywriting space, and using her general communication prowess to interview clients and the public. That's all well and good, but personally we're glad she decided to take up the mantle of passionate word processor through Steam Books and other publishers. Shanika is working toward a doctorate, and utilizes her considerable smarts to fuel her visions of a variety of encounters, multicultural and otherwise.

    Prologue

Robin stood in the back of the police station, waiting impatiently as the police officer pressed her fingers down on the card hard enough to leave fingerprints. She stared down at the contrast of his long, light-brown hands against her own caramel-brown, dainty fingers, reminiscing on how she used to love his touch—under other circumstances, of course.

Robin was already uncomfortable going through this process, but what made it even worse was the fact that she had personal history with this particular police officer.

You know, I was cleaning out my attic the other day and came across some pictures of you, the officer said as he continued maneuvering each finger to make a good print on the card.

Oh, is that right? And what pictures might those be? Perhaps the ones you took of me in the bedroom right before we broke up the last time? The ones I asked for you to get rid of or to give to me at least? Robin asked him.

She continued avoiding his face and decided to look straight ahead. How dare he bring this up right now, and almost four years after the fact, she thought.

Officer Williams remained silent until he finished with her last two fingers on her right hand, then he moved his face into her view so he wouldn’t be ignored.

Look, Robin, I’ll be the first to admit how immature I was back then. I should have said this a long time ago but I’m saying it now. I am sorry for how I did you back then. As a matter of fact, when I saw those pictures I had every intention of trying to connect with you. How ironic that you end up here days later!

He placed a cloth in Robin’s hand so she could clean her fingers as he continued to stare in her light-brown eyes waiting for a response.

Robin returned the look, staring into his hazel eyes the whole time he spoke and apologized to her. That was all she had wanted to hear from him since he had broken her heart. Robin didn’t give a damn about the pictures. Besides, she was the one who begged him to go get his camera and take the damn pictures in her effort to be a little spontaneous and sexy. Then he turned around after the breakup and sent her an email with some of the pictures attached, implying that he would expose them if she didn’t take him back. What an asshole he had been.

Well, I accept your apology, Dean. I really, truly do, and to be quite honest, I forgave you years ago. This is so freaking awkward right now, Robin said with a light chuckle, which made Dean smile. Out of all the officers here that could be doing this right now, you end up being the one to put me through this.

Well, I actually requested to do this. I wanted the chance to speak to you and try to make things right. And I’m talking about beyond my apology. I would like the chance to start over, Officer Williams whispered in Robin’s ear and then stepped back to see her expression.

Robin was in shock. For about a year after they had broken up the very last time, she found it hard to move forward. She never imagined how she and Dean could work things out, but her heart had been so broken she could not imagine giving it to anyone else, either. Now, after all this time, what she had wanted for so long and given up on was being presented to her again.

Dean, how are we going to do this—don’t you think it’s a bit too late for that now?

Dean’s superior walked up behind her to finish the processing. Before Officer Williams could respond, his superior officer guided Robin away to another room.

She turned around to glance back at Dean once more before she quickly turned back around. She felt the tears forming in her eyes. Robin had went this long without letting Dean see her cry; she wasn’t about to let him see her like this now, either.

    Chapter One—How It All Began

Robin Carter had met Dean Williams during her senior year in high school. They were both seniors, but Dean had just transferred to the school that year. Dean was already known amongst the student body because of his football achievements at his previous high school, so when word got around that he was transferring it was like a rock star had arrived. Robin did not even follow sports, but she had been hearing about Dean Williams in the local news and, of course, through her fellow classmates who were excited about his pending arrival.

Robin, although popular in her class and school, was not a part of the crowd that consisted of jocks and cheerleaders. For the first few months of Dean’s arrival at the school, she was never around him to get to know him. There were plenty of girls, mostly groupies, who were competing for his attention. This must have kept him occupied initially, in addition to getting settled into his new school and preparing for scouts and plans for his college career
