Losing weight is not a matter of knowing what to do. If I asked you right now to tell me what you need to do to lose weight, what would you answer? You would probably answer, without hesitating, “Eat less” and/or “exercise more”, like everyone else does.

If we already know what to do, why do we keep looking for a faster, easier way? We have been bombarded with messages and products promising easy, fast, effortless ways to lose weight. We want to believe it, but deep down, we know better. I've been there, tried that, learned that lesson. To me, losing weight isn't a matter of not knowing what to do, but a matter of knowing how to do it – day in and day out for long enough to get the results you want.

365 Tips for Losing Weight will help you from the first pound to the 30th pound to the 50th pound and beyond - and on to your maintenance phase too. Some tips are specific "to dos" to help you cut calories. Some help motivate you to exercise. Some teach the principles you'll need to succeed and keep it off for life. Here are some of the actual tips you'll find in this book:
Day 13 - "Replace part of each meal with fruit or salad. Try new, different fruits and salad vegetables as they’re in season. Fresh fruit is obviously best. Frozen fruit is convenient since it doesn't spoil. Canned fruit isn't the best but if it's a better choice than you usually make, have it."

Day 14 - "One day at a time, one pound at a time. If you take it one day at a time, one meal at a time, and one decision at a time, you'll see results one pound at a time. ..."

Day 31 - "Use my "3-Bite Rule" for high calorie, high fat or high sugar foods - make it 3 bites, even if you can eat it in 1. The trick here is to eat the 3 bites slowly, really slowly, and really enjoy each bite. The first bite is just a warm up and your taste buds will want another, you really enjoy the second bite and look forward to the next, then that third bite is absolutely satisfying. And since you're satisfied, you don't need another bite!"

I know my story is not typical – and neither is yours. Everybody has obstacles, some more, some less, some more serious for sure. I KNOW you can do it, because I have been where you are right now.     Introduction

    This is how I lost 50 pounds in 5 1/2 months - I’ve kept it off since 2001! Using my tips and website I will teach you everything I learned through this journey. It covers the thoughts I had, the things I learned, the things I did, and the changes I went through.

    I’m not a dietician or a personal trainer. I have no letters behind my name. My career is unrelated to dieting or fitness. I’m just like most of you. I understand what you’re going through and what you’ve been through. I did what you want to do. If I can do it, you can do it!

    The first thing you should do is just read through ALL 365 tips - just like reading a book. There’s some basic order in the early tips, but most are just random thoughts and ideas I used to keep myself on track every day.

    You can use these tips alone, with any diet plan or system you choose, or to maintain your weight for life. It’s not easy and you need self-discipline to follow any weight loss plan. Any plan may work, but none will work if you can’t follow it.

    How to Use Tips for Losing Weight

    You've got some great tips for losing weight. But they don't do you any good if you don't know what to do with them. Here are my suggestions to get the most out of each tip...

    1. Read through all 365 tips the first day.

    2. Start at 1 and read a new one daily.

    3. Print each day's tip, cut it out, hang it on the fridge, mirror, dashboard, desk, etc.

    4. Keep your favorites and reread those favorites whenever you're struggling.

    5. Different ideas strike people differently, depending on where they are in the process. If you're not relating to a particular tip, find a previous tip and use it for the day.

    S.C.A.L.E.

    Most of my teaching and information, along with ideas, will be in these tips. That way you get just a little at a time and can take time to think about it, use it, understand it, and apply it to your own situation.

    I think it's a good idea to read through all 365 weight loss tips just like you would a book. Don't be intimidated, they're short. You'll get a good jump start as you see the big picture:

    Support

    Losing weight is sometimes a lonely process. You need someone to lift you up and give you strength when you're feeling discouraged.

    Commitment

    You will make many commitments on your way to your weight loss goal, some small and some big. Using tips for losing weight can help you keep those commitments.

    Accountability

    You must build accountability into your system. You may keep a daily journal of what you eat and your exercise, weigh yourself daily, set up rewards for milestones, etc.

    Learning

    Learning is an important part of anything we do in life. And learning how to lose weight is no different. Be open to learning and looking at things differently. You just may learn a lot about yourself along the way.

    Encouragement

    Everybody needs encouragement to accomplish good things.

    You'll find weight loss tips in each of the S.C.A.L.E. areas mentioned above. Each area is equal in importance to reaching your goal. Don't just look for tips that tell you to do something. Without the foundation the other areas give, you will most likely fail to lose much weight or you will gain it back. This is the classic weakness in most weight loss programs - they only GIVE you fish, instead of teaching you HOW to fish! I want to teach you how to fish!

    Tell a dieter what to eat and do each day, lose some weight for a little while. TEACH a dieter what to eat and do each day, keep him thin for a lifetime.

    Days 1 - 30

    Day 1

    Don't wait for a new year, a new month, a new week or even a new day to get started.

    Get started the next time you eat and make one better choice than you normally do.

    Day 2

    Keep a daily journal where you will write your plan and your actual food/drink and exercise record.

    Don't ignore this journal. Nobody wants to do it, but most people fail! You need to do it anyway, because you want to succeed!

    Writing it down will make you more aware of what, when and how much you're eating and how much (or little) exercise you typically get. You won't have to do it forever, but make the decision right now that you'll do it for at least 3 months, maybe 6.     Day 3

    If you don't have any of these things,

    get them as soon as possible:

    simple bathroom scale, cloth tape measure,

    food scale, measuring cups and spoons.

    You're going to have to get on the scale and accept what you see. And you're going to have to measure or weigh your food for a while. Don't fight it - just do it! You'll be amazed what you'll learn that you thought you already knew!

    Day 4

    You've got to know when you're ready and you've got to know where to get help when you need it.

    By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. (Benjamin Franklin) What does it mean to prepare to lose weight? Don't you just pick a diet and exercise plan and do the parts of it you like? That's all most people think you need to do, but most people don't succeed at this either. You want to succeed at losing weight. So you need to be prepared. Remember, success is where preparation and opportunity meet.

    Day 5

    Plan what you'll eat, then eat what you've planned.

    It's really easy to order pizza or fast food if you're hungry and you haven't planned dinner. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time and write out your menu for the entire day (my journal helps you do this). Before you sit down to eat, you'll know how much you're planning to eat. Eat only what you've planned.
