Your Mind and Emotions
You are in Control
We all make choices. Every day we choose to control ourselves in potentially compromising situations or we do what feels good, no matter what the consequences may be. Either decision makes us happy, but only one of them makes us happy over the long haul.
Given an opportunity to accept a penny every day with the amount doubling for 30 days or $100,000 in cold, hard cash right now, which would you choose? If you’re like most people you’ll grab the $100K. It just makes sense, doesn’t it?
Does it?
Do the math. If you’d taken the doubling penny for a month you’d have $5,368,709.12 after thirty days.
Just because something feels or seems right, especially when you’re tempted, in the long run we often close the door to our own futures! Why make life harder and less pleasant for yourself and your loved ones?
"Feels good now" decisions are the easiest emotions and thought processes to fall victim to. They require far less effort than remaining vigilant for long-term benefit. And following baser instincts seems to require fewer brain cells: most of us would prefer flight to fight when physically challenged; how many of us choose ice cream over healthier fare when dessert time arrives?
But feels good
thinking will not, in the grand scheme of things, make you an achiever. People who weigh each option against their long-term goals are far likelier to make appropriate decisions, open doors of opportunity, and garner the favor of other successful people.
Six Degrees of Separation
You are just six people removed from anyone else in the world. All you have to do is find one partner, lover, boss, friend, or acquaintance to revolutionize your life. Things don’t happen by themselves; you need other people to accomplish great things.
Managing your thoughts is vital to your success if you want to achieve greatness. Your mind has two purposes: to remember/recall and to create/imagine. We employ our memories to revisit pleasant experiences and to recall unpleasant ones so we steer clear of similar situations in the future. Life is about finding, enjoying and sharing pleasant experiences with the people you love.
What you think affects you, like it or not. Your thoughts stimulate or muffle, motivate or de-escalate, encourage or discourage—but they do not own you. You own them. They are yours. They advise you, awake and asleep.
As powerful as thoughts are, you simply must choose and protect what you focus on. Your present thoughts are your responsibility, even though many of them may have been taught you by other people (often when you very little and had no filters to separate the wheat from the chaff).
But be forewarned: No one else really cares what you’re focusing on unless you’re focusing on what they want or need. If you want to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself, you’re going to have to ignore a lot of static: what your parents want (or wanted) for you, the fact that your siblings laughed when you told them your goals, the movie/TV show/bad habit you’re so accustomed to enjoying, the ad that is seducing you away from the calorie count you want to keep so you can get your health back. Lots of people are vying for your time, but it’s YOUR time. It’s all the time you have. Don’t squander it.
This is why you have to guard your focus. If you want something you’ve never had, you need to do something you’ve never done. If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, no one is going to drag you away from it; it’s up to you! If you want to get out of debt, or into better shape; if you want to do anything more than what you’re doing now, now’s the time!
Recruit allies
Look around. Who are your friends? Do they respect your focus or are they usually trying to divert you from your goals? Sad but true: if they’re not supporting your goals by allowing you to focus significant time on them, they’re not really friends. They don’t care really about you; they may simply be using you to make themselves feel better since they have no significant plans for their own futures (or they’d be honoring yours and less available). Worst of all, their habits will rub off on you sooner or later. Your mind tends to mimic the things you see, hear and do whether you intend it or not. So develop a circle of counselors you trust to mentor you. Mentorship is the fastest way to reach the top with the fewest missteps and unpleasant experiences.
There’s no motion without emotion
Without emotion/passion toward your goals, you’ll never develop enough forward motion and attain them. But passion/emotion toward your sincerest goals induces promotion, locomotion, devotion, commotion and sometimes explosion.
Humans are born with three emotions: rage, fear, and love. As we grow, everyday things and social situations get associated with one of these three primary emotions. In general, this is good—all have survival value—but many things are involved in developing a personality; a balancing of emotions is important to become well-rounded.
Well-balanced emotion is key
There are causes and effects whenever you experience an emotion. Here’s an example. You’re getting ready to go pick up a friend. You get into the car.
