About this audiobook

He’ll protect her with every vicious bone in his body.

During her ten years at the prestigious Waywroth Academy, Sera Miller clung to a strict code of propriety to shield herself from rumors that she isn’t an orphan at all. She’s a bastard. Now she wishes she had never allowed her friends to talk her into snooping into the mysterious source of her tuition.

Her benefactor isn’t the unknown father she dreamed of one day meeting, but Fletcher Thomas—underworld tycoon, gambling den owner, and a man so dangerously mesmerizing that he could spark the scandal Sera has worked so hard to avoid.

Fletcher is only two steps away from leaving the life of crime he inherited from his father. First he plans to join an aboveboard railroad consortium, then claim the one thing his ill-gotten gains have kept safe all these years—Sera.

With every wicked caress, Sera fights harder to remember society’s rules and reject the painful memories his touch resurrects. Accepting Fletcher’s love means accepting her past—a risk too great for a woman who has always lived in the shadows. No matter how safe she feels in his arms.

Warning: This book contains a do-gooder heroine, an accidentally charming hero with tendencies toward caveman-itis, inappropriate household décor and fabulous sex against a wall.

Editor's Note

Guardian/Ward Romance...

“Wayward One” is an unconventional forbidden romance devoid of mafia dons or bullies: Instead, a young lady is under the guardianship of the hero, who’s a rakish devil. Despite the power imbalance, sexual sparks fly as soon as the two meet, and the romance is rich and luscious.

Lorelie Brown

After a semi-nomadic childhood throughout California, Lorelie Brown spent high school in Orange County before joining the US Army. Though she's traveled the world from South Korea to Italy, she now lives north of Chicago. She writes about romantic trysts that happen in warm places because sleet is a sad, sad concept. Lorelie has three active sons, two yappy dogs, and a cat who cusses her out for not petting him enough. None of them really care that her book won Bronze in the Foreword INDIES and was nominated for a 2017 RITA from Romance Writers of America. In her immense free time (hah!) Lorelie cowrites award-winning contemporary erotic romance under the name Katie Porter. I really struggled to warm to Sera, her prudishness had me rolling my eyes several times...

She's more repressed & pious than a nun, yet sees nothing wrong with moving in with a bachelor unchaperoned... I can't even ?‍♀️

    She was a complete nincompoop!

"Oh no... my husband loves me, I love him & we have a lusty marriage... we must get a divorce!" Give me strength ?

That her "epiphany" comes about after she feels like she's been elevated socially, did leave a particular nasty taste, I must say...

In truth, I don't think she deserves Fletcher ?‍♀️

Having said that, it was never really explained why Fletcher wanted to marry her. It literally made no sense, from what I understood he hadn't seen her since he was 12 & she was 6.

I think it would've been better, if they had been forced together somehow & he started seeing her in a new light... just my opinion

Didn't finish it. Im either not in the mood for this book or else it's just really boring. I can't take another hour of it let alone 6 hours of the same thing.
    The narrator was OK.

This was a nice romance. I was enjoying the wrap up until it abruptly ended mid scene/ mid sentence.

The Victorian period was repressive and this novel was actually historical in that regard and not merely wallpaper. If you are not willing to learn about the attitudes and values that shaped some of the characters in this period then this isn’t for you. This truly fits the historical romance category. Better editing and it would have earned a 5 star.

While the story is good again unnecessary smut in too many areas spoils the story.
