About this audiobook

When Alistair Haralson unexpectedly inherits a dukedom, he is determined to restore it to its former glory. After being deprived of control of his family fortune by his father’s second wife his prospects are bleak until Miss Margaret Blackthorn makes him an intriguing offer—her industrially acquired fortune in return for a marriage of convenience.

Editor's Note

Doesn’t shy away…

It's a tale as old as time: a lord with a title marries a middle class lady with money. He brings her aristocracy, she brings him cash. Kate Pearce's historicals are well-researched, and she doesn't shy away from grappling with issues of class and money. In this particular marriage of convenience story, the lady proposes to the gentleman, wanting to garner her freedom to live her life as she chooses through marriage. It seems simple, but then there are things like desire, and frank conversation, and dilapidated estates, and the feeling that things are simply not done … until they are.

Trite, utterly predictable and maddening. The sex scenes were good though.

Good love story. Marriage of convenience is always fun especially with a well written hero and heroine.

It was good until the middle and then took a hard left, I didn't even want to finish it.

Absolutely hilarious right from the start, this book has the driest humour and then shows the honesty in both lead characters to the fullest. Absolutely brilliant writing , I highly recommend this book with its humour straight talking and romance.

Great to follow the connections between the various characters and the other books in the series. Enjoyed much.

The story is good but I can’t handle the author. Everyone character sounds whiny or grumpy or older of something. I can’t get past the author enough to enjoy the actual story.

I enjoyed the series, but the narrator was aweful on the third book. First two were good.

Third in series, I got to the wedding and gave up.
The narrator was totally unsuitable for the book.

This was super good as usual but I struggled with the narrator. I hate saying that but I felt like some of her male voices were a little for Ed and it was a little off-putting.

The narrator’s voice on male characters, even halfway through the book, the male narration was not enjoyable or convincing.. wasted audiobook, good storyline though, maybe better to read.

The story started out promising but as like many others posting reviews I couldn’t stand the male voices of the narrator and I had to stop listening.

I want to read this book but honestly the men of the audiobook all sound like the same aged walrus with a massive handlebar mustache. The women are very nasally. No continuity with the previous books’ interpretation. I’ve made it through over two hours of it but it’s just too much of a caricature. It’s just not the best listen. Will try reading later.

Didn't like the reader. Did like the story. Voices didn't fit character.

If this were the best novel ever written, it would not be worth one minute of the awful narration. Ms. McGlovin renders an awful parody of a an upper-class British accent, and her reading is without any thread of continuity to the two previous narrations in this series. Do t=not waste your time and patience.

The book was great, but the voice is very annoying. Wished there was another version so I could revisit later sometime.

Love the story. Didn't love this narrator, if this had been the first in the series I wouldnt have got into it because of the voice. Her reading voice is nice but the gruff "manly" voices were too much.

Whyyy do you change the narrator partway through the series?!! Everytime I get used to a character's "voice", you change the voice on the next book. Please keep the same person for a full series. Also, this one does a male voice impression that is way to growly....
The story and the book? Great!

The 3 stars is strictly because of the narrator of the audio book. The male voice was sounded like a dirty old man. Not a 30 yr old handsome Duke.
The story was good but was hard to get into because of the voice issue.

I'm sure this book is every bit as wonderful as the first two books in the series, but the narrator was so horrible that I couldn't make it past the second chapter. Every single male voice from the crotchety grumpy valet to the handsome, charming 30yo male romantic lead sounded exactly the same - like a gross slovenly lecherous middle-aged lower-class portly innkeeper. Seriously. I had to stop - couldn't even imagine how gross it would be to have that voice in a romantic scene. Disgusting. Oh- and every single female character sounded snippy. And the females and males had completely different accents. Ridiculous. Were it not for the text saying who said what, it would be completely impossible to distinguish one character from another, especially among the males. It's really a shame, because the narrator does beautifully with the cadence and inflection of her reading - very easily understood.

I enjoyed the story, but the narrator did not do the book any favors. She made the women sound hysterical & the men sound stuffy. Not what you want in a romance.

I’m sure this third installment is just as good as the first two books. Unfortunately the voice actress is so bad at narrating the story I only got about 15 minutes into the story before I couldn’t listen anymore. She some how managed to make all the male characters up to that point sound like greasy, crotchety, potbellied old men. Clearly that’s not going to translate well in more explicit scenes because there’s nothing sexy about greasy, crotchety, potbellied old men. I’ll pass on the audiobook and just read the written story to avoid vomiting in my mouth during the steamy scenes. I’m so mad they didn’t use one of the same voice actresses that read the first two books. What a waste…

Audiobooks are big business now so I just dont understand why publishers and authors dont pick the right narrators for their books? Many a good book was abandoned or ruined by bad narration and the author probably never bought again?
Is this book any good? I dont know tbh i listened to a couple of chapters and that was enough. The characters sound like they should be in Richard Osman's retirement home book.
If I'm going to spend 8 hours listening to a book please pick the right narrator or people will skip past and pick another book

A wonderful mixture of feelings, honesty and storytelling. I could not stop listening. For once a heroine who takes her life into her own hands, uses her skills and doesn't wait like Cinderella for her prince. Thank you for a great book.
