About this audiobook

Rival. Sister. Barmaid. Whore.

Meg Henshawe has been a lot of things in her life, and few of them good. As proprietress of The Rose and Crown in Restoration Southwark, she has squandered her life catering to the comfort of workmen and thieves. Famous for her beauty as much as her reputation for rage, Meg has been coveted, abused, and discarded more than once. She is resigned to fighting alone until a passing boxer offers a helping hand.

Jake Cohen needs a job. When an injury forces him out of the ring for good, all he’s left with is a pair of smashed hands and a bad leg. Keeping the peace at The Rose is easy, especially with a boss as beautiful—and wickedly funny—as Meg Henshawe. In her way, she’s as much of an outcast as Jake, and she offers him three things he thought he’d never see again: a home, family, and love.

After Meg’s estranged cousin turns up and seizes the inn, Meg and Jake must work together to protect their jobs and keep The Rose running. The future is uncertain at best, and their pasts won’t stay buried. Faced with one setback after another, they must decide if what they have is worth the fight to keep it. Can broken things ever really be fixed?

Editor's Note

Deep Historical Romance...

Cale’s “Tyburn” series continues with “Broken Things,” whose heroine has been a historical badass throughout. Now it’s her turn in the spotlight, and she’s paired with an ex-boxer as she fights to keep ownership of the pub she owns and that he works for. Cale’s elegant phrasing is matched only by her exquisite historical details, making her Restoration romances some of the deepest, most complex of the genre.

Although I understand that the crude language meets the surroundings, I listened to the story out of interest as I enjoyed the previous books. BUT I will not normally listen to stories with such crude language and will not recommend it to my usual crowd.
I did enjoy the hero though, since he saw the good in Meg.

I’ve enjoyed this series so much! The different characters have great personality and it’s lovely how they all fit together in the colourful background of London’s crowded history .

wasn’t expecting to like this one as much as the others bc meg was a huge bitch in the other ones but this one gave us more insight into her personality (doesn’t excuse her behavior in the other books but it does explain it) she still isn’t my fav person in the world but i enjoyed being able to understand her better and it made me like her much more than i previously did (which was not at all)

Cale’s stories are richer, darker and more complex than much historical romance, and better written and researched. Loved the main characters in this one, and the audiobook narrator tackles the accents and foreign language phrases without distracting too much.

Well written book. I loved Jewish and Dutch background. It was a bit slow for me. Lots of spicy scenes. I loved Jake but I struggled to relate to Meg. I loved to hear about happy endings of so many characters from this series. My favourite characters are Jane and Mark.

I started this thinking I wouldn't like it, but I couldn't have been more wrong. It's the best book I've read (or listened to) in many years. I didn't think I'd be able to relate to the characters, didn't think I'd be able to believe in a romance in which the heroine has been a prostitute for years. I ended up loving her. It's just a beautifully written book, with wonderful characters. The plot is excellent, and not the usual tired formulaic fare historical romance authors tend to rely on. I can't wait to read more from this series! The narrator is fantastic. I was completely unaware of her. Her pacing, her cadences and inflections, her accents were all amazing.
