About this audiobook
Go beyond the original Shondaland series on Netflix, Queen Charlotte, with this lushly romantic Bridgerton prequel novel written by New York Times bestselling authors Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes as the marriage of Queen Charlotte and King George of England leads to an unexpected love story and a union that transforms society.
In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.
Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she, and her King, needed.
Because George has secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.
Thrust into her new role, Charlotte must navigate the intricate politics of the court—with the newly-titled Lady Danbury at her side—all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King…even as he pushes her away. Now, Charlotte must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society, fulfilling her destiny as Queen. But she also has to fight for the love growing between her and George as people first, royals second. As she says to him: “Fight with me! Fight for me!”

Blockbuster backstory…
Quinn brought us the blockbuster books, and Rhimes brought us the sensational Netflix series adaptation. Together, they deliver the backstory every “Bridgerton” fan has been waiting for. Based on an all-new Shondaland series by the same name, “Queen Charlotte” is the story of young Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as she marries King George III and learns to navigate her new royal position — all decades before she becomes the formidable figure who rules the ton we know and love.

I’ve read all of the Bridgerton books and this was BY FAR the best. The characters were truly compelling and multifaceted. I found this to be the most empowering to read as well! The female characters were so strong and inspiring. The book does an amazing job depicting how different marriages looked and how complex different kinds of love can be.
This is the first Bridgerton book that didn’t leave me cringing for the female characters when they throw all personal convictions to the wind as soon as they meet a penis. These women had morals and values and complex love stories that deal with race and mental illness and arranged marriages.
I absolutely recommend reading!!!2 people found this helpful

Listened to it on audio book after watching the netflex series, I enjoyed the retelling of King George and Queen Charlotte's love story. I have read most of the Julia Quinn's book. I love the familiarity, the connections of the members of the ton in her books. I enjoyed the way she incorporated the Hastings and the Smythe-Smiths in this story. I very much enjoyed this prequel to the Bridgeton Series.1 person found this helpful

I have listened to all the Bridgeton books to include the father’s sister’s book this is the best for me showing off that genuine love, friendship and the view on “special needs” in that era I thoroughly enjoyed. I will now watch the movie again.1 person found this helpful

This was a excellent audible. I saw the Netflix version first and to my surprise the movie and the audiobook were pretty much the same. I think I enjoyed the audiobook the best because it didn't flash back and forth between the past and the future. Still an awesome historical romance that I highly recommend! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I haven't seen the show yet but now I am chomping at the bit to watch it! This audiobook was so good! The narrator was top notch (loved the accent!) and she really helped bring this regency romance to life! Queen Charlotte wasn't a steamy slow burn - there was romance, but it unfolded in a caring and tender manner. King George hid his mental breaks from everyone but his closest advisors and when he is forced to marry a queen, the color of her skin doesn't matter but he is determined to hide his "mental decline" from her and it strains their marriage. When she finally discovers his ailments she is more than supportive. This story also focuses on the two main servants and their relationship as well as Lady Danbury. Wonderful addition to the Bridgerton universe! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

A prequel to the Bridgerton books, this one tells the story of how Charlotte became queen and the struggles she faced, especially early on in the marriage.
My least favorite of the series, but that’s mostly because I don’t really like the character of the queen, especially in the show.
