WHO IS TRULY A DISCIPLE ?

In this booklet, we present the nine marks of a disciple, an extended excerpt from The Making of Disciples by the author. They are drawn from the Word of God.

Read each one carefully and answer the questions that follow, preferably in writing.

    1

A SUPREME LOVE FOR THE LORD

    The Bible says,

You shall love the Lord your God with ALL your heart, and with ALL your soul, and with ALL your might (Deuteronomy 6:5).

In other words, you are to love the Lord with all of your

    spirit,

    soul,

    body.

A disciple is one who loves the Lord with all of his spirit, soul and body. There will always be room for expansion and growth in loving the Lord, but from the very beginning of his walk with the Lord, the true disciple will put all that he is and all that he will ever be into loving the Lord. As the disciple knows more of the Lord in future, he will respond more to the Lord then, but for the moment, the disciple must be able to say with a clear conscience before the Lord and to the Lord, Lord, with all of my being, I love you.

Loving the Lord is not a sentimental affair, although sentiments do get involved. No one should say that he does not feel love in his heart for the Lord. No one should say that he has an emotional problem that causes him not to feel love for the Lord as the other believers do. There is one fundamental test of love. There is one way of proving whether a person loves the Lord or not. This test is obedience. Those who love the Lord obey Him. All who are disobedient to Him do not love Him. The Lord Jesus said,

If you love me, you will keep my commandments (John 14:15).

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them (John 13:17).

Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it! (Luke 11:28).

Loving the Lord demands very costly obedience - obedience at the very cost of your life. Loving the Lord demands total obedience. Partial obedience is gross disobedience. Loving the Lord demands unpopular obedience. God asked the prophet Isaiah to walk naked for three years (Isaiah 20:1-3). That was unpopular. It
