Ephesus was the largest city in the Roman province of Asia. Located at the mouth of the Cayster River, it was a flourishing commercial and export centre. Ephesus boasted a major stadium, marketplace, and a theatre built on the slope of Mount Pion that overlooked the harbour and seated 25 000 people.
Ephesus had temples built for Claudius, Hadrian, and Severus. The major religious attraction was the Temple of Artemis (Diana), being one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The temple measured 129,5m long, 67m wide, and 18m high with 127 marble pillars – of which 36 were overlaid with gold and jewels.
GOOD TEACHING
The church in Ephesus received good teaching and spiritual oversight from both Paul (Acts 18:19-21), Apollos (Acts 18:24-28), as well as Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:26).
